1999 vw beetle every now and then it won't turn over. Good battery, lights, interior lights, blinkers, radio, electrical all seems good. But the motor wont turn, no click nothing, checked the clutch switches, there good. Can you help?
Try this procedure:
Check the battery like this:
Turn on the headlights, then try to start the car.
If the headlights do not dim or go out, then the battery is likely ok.
Check that the battery cable plus post, goes to the starter, Minus post to a good ground, like the engine.
If wiring is ok, then look at the starter solenoid for a good connection, and proper voltage at the starter.
Problem is most likely the Solenoid's bendix gear or starting relay, Have someone bang on the starter while you try to start the car. This usually works by dislodging the bendix gear..

Even though all your other electrical bits are working it could be that your battery doesn't have enough juice to crank the engine. It doesn't take much power to run the radio, lights, etc, but cranking the engine requires the battery to have a very strong charge. If your battery is more than 5 years old, that's very likely the issue. I'd start there. Also, be sure to check the battery terminals and ground for corrosion and clean if necessary. If replacing the battery doesn't solve the problem it could be the starter solenoid or a loose electrical connection somewhere.

My daughter has a 99 Beetle GL and the A/C and fan went out. It's the A/C haeadunit that needed to be replaced. The switches short out and you have to replace the whole piece. VW charges about $225 for the part Hope that helps

yes, it's called the load reduction relay and it is in the 13 fold relay panel under driver side dash.

It's possible that the wire that connects the starter to the battery has corrosion/battery acid on it and is creating a lot of resistance in the wire. Sometimes you'll have a good connection, sometimes you'll have a bad connection thus creating an intermittent problem. You should check the wire that hooks into the starter, disconnect it, clean it with a small, wire bristle brush, and maybe spray some of that red, battery terminal spray on it, then hook it back up. Make sure you disconnect the battery first. It's pretty hard to get down in there but you can save yourself a ton of money if you do it yourself. You may be able to reach it better from underneath if you drive the car up on some ramps.

One difference here. One the NON-CONVERTABLE new Beetle, the hazard button is the flasher... on the convertable, there is a separate sealed relay box under the dash to keep from having the switch short out of you leave the top up.

Actually pull out the radio fuse for 15 seconds and then re-install. Mine usta just quit working once in a great while, and this was the fix. Radio fuse #42 if this is a "New Jetta A4 body" or fuse # 22 on an older "A3 body style"
