You have to install the drivers which came along with the printer in the form of driver CD or you can download the driver from the manufacturer's website.
After installing the driver connect the USB cable with the PC to printer, which came along with the printer and check for cartridge. Plug the power cable and then power on the printer.
Now go to start - printer and faxes - check for your printer as per the model no. - eight click on it for the properties - go for the print test page. If all well, you will have the printout.

Print head is not installed. Install the print head what does this mean?

The print heads nowadays are on the ink cartridge itself, check to make sure that A) there is ink cartridges and B) they are properly inserted.
Failing that take the power out for 2 mins and try again, I'm sure its a loose cartridge though :)

How can i print without a colour ink cartridge on my canon mx 310 printer

IF YOU ARE ABLE TO AT LEAST FIND AN EMPTY COLOR CARTRIDGE TO INSERT, THEN ADJUST YOUR SETTINGS TO "PRINT COLOR IN BLACK AND WHITE", IT SHOULD ALLOW YOU TO PRINT. AS FAR AS I KNOW, IT WILL NOT PRINT IF THE COLOR CARTRIDGE SLOT HAS NO CARTRIDGE IN IT.

Put in new ink cartridge but now printer will not print

First make sure you replaced the ink cartridge with right brand and model number that fits your printer.
If that is correct Then re-insert the cartridge make sure to remove the protective seal first.:)

Replaced color cartridge but printing very faint

I would check your cartridge insert were the cartridge sits and make sure that its not dirty or something is interfering with the color cartridge.

Won't print

Turn the printer off.
Wait 20 seconds.
Turn the printer on.
Lift the cover -- hopefully, the print-head will move to the position where the cartridges can be accessed.
Remove one cartridge.
Re-insert that cartridge.
Close the lid.
If you still get the "blinking", re-open the lid, remove the other cartridge, and re-insert that cartridge.

Otherwise, see: http://www.usa.canon.com and enter your model-number, and download the manual (PDF) and follow its directions, or read the online-help for your specific PIXMA.

Only black will print

First, in printer properties, print a test page...How's it look?, Is there color?  If not, please remove the cartridges and be sure that you have removed all of the plastic covering from each of them and make sure you insert them correctly.  Then, in printer settings make sure you select to print in color.

Cant install a print cartridge

Make sure the printer is turned on before you try to insert the cartridges. Open the cover and watch for the cartridge carrier to move from its "home" position (on the right side) all the way over to the left. Once it is all the way to the left, insert the cartridges, lifting up on the end nearest you to lock the cartridge into place.
