Question about Gaggenau 11 in. VG 232 Gas Cooktop

1 Answer

No flame touching thermocouple

On the wok burner (big one front left), there is a outer flame and an inner flame. The inner flame is the one that heats the thermocouple, to allow the burner to stay lit after releasing knob. My outer burner lights, but there is no flame(no gas flow I presume) on the inner ring. So burner goes out a few seconds after releasing knob. I used a 10mm allen wrench to remove the iner brass ring to check for an obstruction to the flow of gas..looks clear. I assume there must be a problem further upstream. I'd like to try to fix it before resorting to a service call tomorrow.

There must be a blockage on the inner flame ring as the gas is not getting to the thermocouple .

Small burner will not stay lit when it sparks

assuming this is a gas cooktop? It would be part of the flame failure safety most likely. There is a thermocouple that detects the flame and converts that heat to a small electric signal to tell the gas valve to stay open and/or closed.

A thermocouple is a sensor for measuring temperature. It consists of two dissimilar metal wires, joined at one end.
In the event the flame goes out, the design of the thermocouple is the valve would shut of gas supply to the burner.

In the event the thermocouple is faulty, check it is clean from carbon, and ensure it has not been bent.

Contact a qualified technician to get them to inspect further and replace thermocouple if required.

Remove the front panel to find where the gas injectors enter the burner tubes you will see they are cut away and have a screw holding an outer ring which is adjustable, open them up more to get more air in .

Gas burner will not stay lit. works fine when pressing knob for igniter function but goes out when knob is released

You have what we call a flame safe device fitted to the burner, (thermocouple lead), have you checked to make sure your flame on the burner is touching the tip of the "probe" on t'couple, if it isn't make sure that the ports on the burner are clear. If this does not solve problem then the thermocouple needs replacing by a Gas Safe engineer.

Miele KM 3474 stove top lights but turns off after 30 seconds

Does the burner attempt to re-ignite after it goes out? If so, it's probably the therocouple. If not, it could be the burner valve. Be sure the caps and rings are correctly seated on the burners and be sure to firmly press the burner knob down to start the flame.

The elements DO BURN OUT. Replace it.

Often you can see evidence of a hot spot on the element where the final failure occured, but not always.

Poorly functioning Shipmate stove

Hi

Normally pressing red buttons on stoves is for lighting the oven. You press the button, light the pilot light, leave it depressed for a minute and then that heats up the thermocouple, which opens a valve and allows gas to the main burner.

Shipmate Stoves are still in business, so you could contact them. The link also suggests places for Shipmate propane gas stove spares.

Burnes extinguish once lit.

These have flame failure technology so the gas will cut out if there is no flame. The thermocouples do this by keeping the gas valve open once they have heated up. This should only take 5-10secs though so any longer is probably an issue with the thermocouple

Burner will not stay lit

Presuming the flame is touching the thermocouple, try putting slightly more pressure on the knob and hold for a few seconds longer. If this doesn't work try going through the same process with the knob removed - if this works you need to put a small piece of packing in the shaft of the knob ( a small piece paper might do). If this fails you need a new thermocouple.
