This could be as simple as the power button sticking. Make sure it is all put together properly and no screws are over-tightened. The first thing i would do is remove the plastic bezels and covers revealing the bare board and button, and try turning it on. If it still turns itself off, replace the board again, i doubt it is a BIOS issue (unless there is a problemn with the battery or charger) - start there, if it doesnt work, we can look further

The issue might be due to corrupted drivers or with other operating system settings. Let me assist you in this regard.

2. Type Device Manager in the Start Search box
3. Click the Device Manager.
4. Click the "+" sign next to Imaging devices.
5. Click the first device listed under Imaging devices .
6. Click Remove to remove the HP webcam 1000 driver.
7. Click OK for confirmation.
8. Close the System Properties box.
9. Restart the computer by clicking Start, Shut down, Restart, and then OK

Note : Uninstall all the webcam drivers that you come across.

Install the Webcam drivers that are being provided URL:

ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp34501-35000/sp34746.exe

Installation Instructions

1. Download the SoftPaq .EXE file to a directory on your hard drive.

I recommend you reset the "Windows Image Acquisition (WIA)" service settings by performing the below steps:

3. Type "services.msc" and click on Ok
4. In the list, select the "Windows Image Acquisition (WIA)"

After the above steps are performed, please check the functionality of the Webcam by following the below steps:

To work with the built-in Webcam of your notebook, you have to use either QuickPlay or Muvee Autoproducer software installed in the notebook or use Yahoo, MSN or AIM messenger and check the functioning of Web Cam.

To use QuickPlay, perform the below steps :

* Click on the Vista button (formerly called the Start Button, and also now referenced as the Pearl button)
* Click on All Programs
* Click on QuickPlay
* Within the QuickPlay application, click the Video icon (Icon resembles, camera, music, and film)
* Double click on "HP Webcam" in the Source column

The screen will now display the webcam input. From this screen, the customer can click record at the top; recorded files will be added to the play list. To playback video, the customer should double click on a file from the Play list column.

To use Muvee Autoproducer software perform the below steps :

Open Muvee Auto Producer >> Click Tools >> Get Video from Camcorder.

If issue persists, then stop and temporarily disable Windows Media Center Receiver Service (if found)

1. Open the Services item in Control Panel. To do this, click Start, type services in the Start Search box, and then click Services in the
Programs list.
2. Click Windows Media Center Receiver Service.
3. On the Action menu, click Properties.
4. Click the General tab.
5. In the Startup type field, click Disabled, and then click OK.
6. Restart the computer.

Uninstall Vista security update KB915597 (if found in your notebook)

1. Open Programs and Features by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking Programs, and then clicking Programs and Features.

2. Select Vista security update KB915597, and then click Uninstall. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Additionally, download and install the fix from the following link:

ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp36001-36500/sp36128.exe

Alternatively for testing the HP webcam you can follow the below steps

Download the and install SoftPaq SP35414 to preview the WebCam.

ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp35001-35500/sp35414.exe

NOTE: Clicking the link may give an error indicating it is
invalid. If this occurs, copy the portion of the address
on the remaining line(s) and paste it at the end of the
address showing in your browser until the complete address
is displayed in the Address box.

This Software has a Preview, Capture, Take a Snap options.

Now for using the webcam with the above software you should follow the path mentioned below:

My compaq notebook presario cq50 210us is frozen on a black screen

Try the laptop on an external monitor, if it works ok on that, the fault lies with the laptop screen
If it does not work on that, the fault is with the graphics chip on the laptop

If it was working ok then suddenly died, check to see if you can boot to safe mode (F8)

repost the results

There is recovery partition on my compaq presario CQ50 - 209wm and I'd like some help oh how I can use that to restore/reinstall my vista?

Normally during the early start sequence (when the laptop displays the Compaq logo), you will need to press F9, F10 or F11 repeatedly (model varies)
Some also require you to hold the key down before you press the power button, then release it after the laptop has finished displaying the Compaq logo.
Hope that helps.
If you are still lost, post back.

Broken fan on compaq

don't keep running it until you replace the fan. Look for one on ebay or around the web. It is shutting down because of heat. A $20 fan could cost you your whole laptop if you keep running it.
