On the end of the shaft that comes from the motor there should be a bolt that holds the pulley in place. You will need to remove the bolt in order to get the pulley off. If you can lift the front end onto a couple of blocks it will make the job easier to do. You may have to place a screw drive in between the belt and the pulley. A wood wedge the width of the belt would be better as it would be less likely to damage the pulley. Depending on how old the tractor is, you may have to spray the bolt with a penetrating oil first to help loosen the bolt.

There should be a key and most likely it is a woodruff key which means there is no set screw to remove from the hub of the pulley. But to be sure that is not a square key you need to look at the end of the shaft. Use a mirror to take a look at the end of the shaft, if you can see the key then you should be able to tell which type of key you have. If you have the bolt removed, then use a 3 jaw puller to pull the pulley off. To avoid damaging the pulley find 3 metal pads or strips and place them in between the jaws of the puller and the pulley. Make sure that the pads or strips you use are the same thickness, that will ensure that puller stays straight. To help keep the puller from moving around take a string or some tape and wrap it around the jaws of the puller as tightly as you can. If you have the front end up on blocks then make sure that one of the jaws is toward the front of the tractor. If you have been able to remove the bolt in the end of the drive shaft then put it back in, but only a couple of turns, this will help to avoid damage to the shaft. Now you can turn the puller shaft aganst the head of the bolt and tighten it. Continue to tighten the puller aganst the bolt head and the pulley should start to pull off. I'll be near the computer today if you need any more help or calcification.

To Hatter 1: I have the belts off, but I'm having trouble getting the pulleys off the shaft, so I can unbolt the engine & pull it up & off the frame, so I can change the gaskets. Is there a key on the bottom part of the shaft or what? Thanks.
