Question about Pool & Spa

1 Answer

Pool skimmer has too much suction after changing to PVC pipe.

I just replaced my pool hoses with PVC plumbing. Everything went good except when I turned the pump on, I noticed that the suction from the skimmer was too strong and the skimmer float was pulled all the way down. I replaced my 1 1/4 inch hose with 1 1/2 inch PVC pipe. Could this be the problem. I have a 1 HP pump and added a new Hayward DE filter. I didn't add DE yet because I wanted to test for leaks since I added new PVC plumbing. Could that be the problem because I didn't add DE to the filter yet.

Do you mean a PVC shutoff valve going to the skimmer and to the pump suction then turn the valve a little to slow suction?

do not choke off the pump in any way... skimmer to the main drain, you will need to down size your pump

In you first answer to sent me you said, "If you only have a skimmer and no valve to direct suction from the skimmer to he main drain" what exactly does that mean? I know what the skimmer is but I am lost at what you mean by the main drain. I seen pictures of those who installed shutoff valves under the skimmer pipe and thought you meant to use that valve to slow down the pump's suction.

I tel my customers to use a 3/4 hayward super pump. or you can add another skimmer and more return lines. you will also need a filter, i suggest a hayward 120. the better you have filter pump and filter system the longer you will get to enjoy the pool. use the pump and filter I suggest, raise the pump off the ground about 1 foot and I think you will find you will gett years and years and years of service.. NO CHLORINE TABS IN THE SKIMMER ! use a floaty and tie it off by one of the return jets. .. best of luck .. jay the pool pump motor repair guy in longwood florida

SOURCE: Hayward Self-Priming Pump with AO Smith 1 HP 56J

the pump must not have any air leaks in the suction side of it,, or it will just **** air and not water,,, water is very heavy you see, however i think its the impeller in the pump thats the problem,,,you should try to put water in the out let of the pump so you fill the pump with water first if its dryed out it may just wear out the impeller before it starts to **** water up, if this still dont work turn off the stop **** and strip out the pump to look at the impeller any wear on it and it will need a new one fitted
i hope this has help you, good luck

SOURCE: NOT FILTERING, NO SUCTION, CHANGE SAND,,,SINCE DAY ONE..WRONG HP?

You are correct. Your lines are extremely small for this system and the pump is to small for this system. You are going to have to do a total upgrade. from the pump to all the lines. I know this is bad news, but it is a common problem for system that where put in more then 10 years ago

I cant pull hose of the skimmer

Check your main pool vacuums line, it must be clogged to cause it to collapse and maintain suction after the pump is off.

I have an Easy Set and using a skimmer. Should I remove the extra intake hose?

Huh?
i am confused... What does a hose have to do with the ability of the pump to move water?

Suction of a pump has nothing to do with an extra hose.
Suction ability has everything to do with whether a filter element is clean or dirty!
These toy pumps have an exceptionally SMALL filter, and need cleaning or replacement OFTEN!
The suction action of a pump should not change, with the attachment of a skimmer: unless... The skimmer is higher than it should be and sucks air, therefore the pump will lose prime!
If you comment back with a little more detail, somebody will be glad to assist.

Hayward pro series sand filter does not have enough suction to operate pool cleaner. What can cause this?

if you are getting a suction noise at the skimmer then that means you need more water in the pool. Also if you have anything in the skimmer basket like tablets then take out the basket when you are using the vac. the only other thing I can think would be the problem would be the filter is clogged. I know you have back washed it but I would do it again to be sure it is not dirty. good luck

My creepy crawley has to much suction and gets stuck in one spot is there a way of turning the suction down

Attenuate your skimmer valve slowly to reduce the suction until the cleaner runs smoothly across the bottom of the pool. If you do not have a skimmer valve I would recommend installing an inline PVC valve in the suction hose close to the skimmer so that it is accessible. Close the valve slowly until proper suction is achieved.

Moves slowly and the stops. looks like diapham doesn't open back up

This seems to indicate insufficient suction from skimmer. Confirm that all other skimmers are closed off properly. Suction can be checked by disconnecting suction hose from pool cleaner and placing your hand over the end of the hose. Suction hose may also have an obstruction which will inhibit proper operation.

Is not moving and I have cleaned and check the hoses for blockages and cleaned the filter.

You need to check the flapper to see if it is stuck. Then if you still have your suction guage. Check to be sure you have enough suction at the end of the hose. Check the hoses for leaks, make sure you don't have a clog in your impeller and your plumbing is tight and the lid "O" ring on your pump is good and seated well. Also if you have a skimmer plate be sure your front hole in the bottom of it is plugged off solid. Good luck.

When installing a chlorine pack I turned the water supply off and forgot. Hour later noticed the water wasnt moving and went to pump and the skimmer basket was so hot it was melted and smoking. Waited...

Probally it is your plumbing in and out of the pump has shrunk from the heat and causing it to **** air. You will need to replumb and do the pressure side of the pump at the same time as it has probally shrunk also and will leak water when you get it going. Just for good measure you should do the pump seal at the same time.

Pump and skimmer instructions on how to

Direction of flow is FROM the skimmer to the pump and back to the jet. Its easy enough to determine which hose is the "jet" hose and which is the suction hose. Put both into the water, or in a bucket and turn on the pump, find the one that is shooting out water, that's the jet hose. On these systems, filter replacement and cleaning is annoyingly frequent if you want it to work even remotely efficient.

Leaves in the skimmer line and its plugged

Is the obstruction on hte suction side or supply side of the pump?

Either way, you can disconnect the pump, and work from there. If the pump was installed correctly there shgould be unions ( fitting that can be reconnected on the pump suction and supply. If not, you can cut the pipes a few inches from the pump and then shorten the remainder to acomodate the length of the union. Glue these in place follow the instructions on the glue can.

Try using a water hose with the water on from the direction of the pump to the pool. see if this does the job. Leaves should be able to be pulled through by the oumop, I suspect somthing larger. Do you have a strainer on the suction line? Have you checked the pool filter?

I would check the filter first. Why do you think the problem is a clogged line? How do you know the pump is performing? Does it run a Spa, and nbot the pool?
\Good Luck

Operation my Pentair 2" Pvc, 3 Way Lube Free Diverter

Every valve is unique to the system in which it is plumbed. You cannot specifically say that there is one way to turn a valve and then apply it to your situation. So, there is a way to determine what you need. Three way valves should be plumbed with the water flowing into the valve at what one would recognize as the "leg" of a letter "T".

Assuming the valve is plumbed this way, the source of flow to the other ports is either from the pool/spa or to the pool/spa. for a valve plumbed in front of a pump, the direction is from the pool/spa. For the other 3 way valve, it is to the pool/spa.

The easiest way to detemrine flow is point the valve handle to one direction. Keep in mind that water flow travels under the valve handle. So, if you see water flowing from your skimmer at the pool, the direction the valve handle is pointing is FROM the pool. The opposite port of the valve (180 degrees) is FROM the spa. Do the same for the other valve. If water flows to the spa with a jet action as opposed to a small trickle, you have directed flow TO the spa.

In general, both handles will be pointed in the same direction. At times, they may not so that is why you need to determine flow and then label thew ports.

It is not wise to run a system with the flow not set for POOL suction/POOL return or SPA suction/SPA return. Having the valves in opposite direction can result in an elevated spa draining to a level equal to the pool.
