Question about Canon PowerShot SX100 IS Digital Camera

1 Answer

My Canon Camera

I dropped my camera on accident. Now it turns on but the screen is black. No buttons work while the camera is "on", so its kinda like the camera is off but the lenses are out. Every one in a while it wont have a black screen but it will have a high pitch squeal, then turn black shortly after it has began. My camera wont let me take any more photos or videos, but I can watch or look at that pictures/videos I have already taken. Whats wrong with my camera? Do I have to sent it in? How can I fix it?

Have you actually cleaned the contacts or are you just looking at them and they "look" clean? Clean them with a cotton swab lightly dampened in rubbing alcohol.

No pics, only black screen when camera is working

According to Canon, they say that your lens may have a problem. This problem is caused when you drop the device or bang it by accident. Please have it checked by Canon especially if it is still under warranty.

Canon IXUS 100IS - 'Lens error, restart camera' message

Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ... Unfortunately, many cameras that fall prey to this can only be corrected by professional repair. But, here are some things that you can do that may correct it. They only seem to work for less than 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try:

Turns out my husband must have pressed a button by accident. The bottom left button says "disp" for display. Pressing that fixed the screen!

Canon A620 No Picture

First try hitting the DISP button (sorry if this offends, but many people have made this mistake). If this doesn't help, next try resetting the camera. Turn on the camera, and hold the menu button for at least five seconds. Believe reset is also in the menus.

If the above doesn't help, then unfortunately this sounds like your CCD image sensor may have failed. This would then require professional repair. Contact Canon at 1-800-OK-CANON.

Did you accidentally hit the "Disp." button (lower left corner)?

Black screen

Isn't there a display on/off button on the back? It's purpose is to turn off the LCD display to save batteries, thus aiming your pictures using the optical viewfinder instead. Look for a button labeled "Disp.", it's in the lower left corner. Turn the camera on and press this button once.

If this doesn't work, am concerned that you also mention the pictures are also black. This can indicate a potential failure of the CCD image sensor, or its connectors from impact shock. To fix would require actually opening the camera, and can be more expensive to fix than the worth of the camera. If Canon quotes a fixing price that's shocking, consider gently tapping the camera against a hard surface on its padded USB cover. This may help reestablish a connection of the sensor's ribbon cable to its connector.

you probably just pressed the DISP button on accident (its on the lower right hand corner of the screen) to turn the screen back on, push the DISP button. if that doesnt work, i would get it looked at by people at Canon.

Camera was dropped, lens will not retract, when on/off button is pressed the initial screen and sound appear but then the camera makes a kind of warning sound and E18 appears in the lower left hand co

Perhaps the lens got bumped (if the camera was one when it was dropped) and is out of place. Mine did the same and I sent it in (it was within warranty) and Canon fixed it.
