The maxtor 1 TB usb harddrive is making clicking

The drive is dead, the clicking is a mechanicle failure. if you want your data back you will have to spend alot of money on data recovery

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but your hard drive is crashing and will be totally unusable soon if it is not already. As for recovering the data , I understand it is a very complicated and expensive undertaking depending on how damaged the disc is.

DO NOT try and use the disc if you want the data recovered as it becomes more damaged every time it is running.

I would take it to a repair center for an evaluation, but you will definitely need a new hard drive. Hope you haven't lost too much data , know what its like!
