Whirlpool Side By Side not making Ice, but water dispenser works
I have the same issue Barry was having and need to find a fix. Here are the symptoms:
My Kenmore Elite (106.50592003)Side by Side Refrigerator stopped producing ice. Water dispenser on door works fine. Freezer temperature is fine. Was getting no Status LED light - replaced emitter and receiver boards and now get normal Status LED light indications - but no ice is filling up bin after 24 hr wait. Slide switch is in ON position. Also, don't hear any water filling into icemaker. Don't have any diagrams or schematics. Will purchase service manual to get some additional insight, but any recommendations anyone has would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Whirlpool Side By Side not making Ice, but water...
Check to see if the water outlet tube in the freezer is blocked with ice. That is a common problem and there is a fix kit out to solve the ice problem. if the tube is not blocked you need to check the water valve for the ice maker and make sure its good. you will need a volt meter to check it. so check these two things out. And to check to see if the water tube is frozen ,stick a small screwdriver in it and check for a blockage.

you've already done the first thing i suggest, and that is to change the water filter. But if you still cant get ice made, you have a problem with either your ice maker or your water valve, or an electrical issue in the ice maker system.
Does the water dispenser work? Is there a light at the dispenser panel, does it light? Do you hear any noises or motors running when you actuate ice dispenser? You could have a power issue for the dispenser. Some newer whirlpool models have an issue with the wiring leading into the door at bottom being so securley fastened to frame, the lack of movement forces the wires to bend, and in time break, with door usage. If water dispenser works, and you hear no sounds when the ice lever is actuated, then you have a problem with the dispenser panel circuit board. if water works and you hear some sounds when ice lever is actuated, such as a loud popping noise, then you have a bad ice dispenser auger motor, not churning the ice out of the bucket.
I have a whirlpool side by side. water and ice in front. ice working and water not. the hose is not frozen and it is not humming when you push the water dispenser. It would give us water and quit but now we have nothing.
I had a Whirlpool Model GD5SHAXNS in which the icemaker quit working about the same time (3 years old). I had water out the dispenser, I found that it was the icemaker itself failed not calling for water to fill it. I replaced it with a icemaker on-line for about $100 and problem fixed. I have been told his is a common problem with the icemaker in this model ref.
I just resolved an issue with my kenmore elite side by side refrigerator icemaker (model 106).
It was expensive because I took the long road to fixing the unit myself.
My problem: No water going up to the freezer water dispenser into the
icemaker but the water in front of the door working just fine.
-first thing i tried was the simplest. The Internet is clogged with
this miracle fix of using a hair dryer to melt the frozen water line
going to the dispenser output. This is highly unlikely for our model
since the water line is protected within the refrigerator frame.
-2nd thing I replaced my water filter (thinking that there wasn't
enough water pressure to trigger the solenoid valve. $40, and still no
-3rd thing was I tested for voltage going to the solenoid. No voltage
going to solenoid, so I wasted $30 for a new solenoid.....still no
-4th thing was I ordered a new IR sensor and receiver (since the
reciever end is where the relay that sends the voltage to the solenoid
to turn on and allow water to go up to the dispenser).
My IR sender and receiver appeared to be working flakey.
Installed, still no water. $58 BUCKS ON EBAY (EVERYWHERE ELSE $100+)
-I finally removed the freezer front little white door, I TURNED OFF
THE FREEZER SWITCH SO NO VOLTAGE WAS PRESENT, removed the release latch
underneath the freezer unit and disconnected, and removed the freezer
unit to inspect it further.
When I removed the protective white cover that covers the mechanical
wheel, I had a few parts come flying out of it. Turns out that the
wheel accessories were damaged. THERE ARE NO REPAIRABLE PARTS ON THE
FREEZER UNIT. I FOUND ONE ON EBAY FOR $39 BUCKS + $9 SHIPPING! $48
BUCKS, SWAPPED THE HARNESS AND BOTTOM COVER, AND IN 20 MINUTES, I WAS
BACK IN BUSINESS. STARTED MAKING ICE IN ABOUT A HALF HOUR!!!!!
when in doubt, replace the freezer unit for $48 bucks! 7 out of 10
times it will fix your problems. All techs replace the IR set at the
same time too which will set you back another $58 bucks.
Good luck! ;)
I have had a few where the water switch housing that holds the switch breaks and does not allow the arm to hit the switch to turn water on. that is one thing it could be ethier way not to big of an expence to get fixed
check to make sure there is water or ice in your ice maker tray. If none then problem is usually a water supply issue to the ice maker. Behind the frig are the water supply inlet valves. One is for the water dispenser in the door. THe other is for the ice maker. However when one goes bad they both are replaced as one unit. Also Check position of fingers in ice maker. If not in a vertical position
then try to reset the ice maker unit and worse comes to worse, replace
it with a new one.
Barry, check out the above post, it will give you instructions on how to jump start it. Reply back if you cant get to it. Catriver.
Womers, make sure there is not a lock-out on the dispensor panel. If there is, hold it in for 5 seconds and see if the dispensors come alive. Because both water and ice are not working, I would think you have a dispenser board issue. Catriver..post back.
