You must log in as the administrator to change the supervisor password. Otherwise check with the PC vendor.

SOURCE: supervisor password...

I'm not sure what is meant by it being on top of the bios password, I'll need more info.

However, A bios password can be reset by removing the coin cell battery for 15 seconds from underside of most laptops in a compartment with a cover removable by a screw(s).

If the password is not part of the bios it is on the hard drive. The only way I no of wiping out an operating system password such as in windows xp is to do a fressh install of the operating system wiping out the old one.

Other than that the only other place I could think of there being a password is on the boot sector of the hard drive and formatting the boot sector and repartitioning the hard drive wiping out all data can remove any password on the hard drive.

  • Hello kiloecho, if by chance you didn't 'create a "Supervisor Password" to prevent anyone from changing the configurations in the BIOS / CMOS Setup? than we are 'OK!' Lets just say [No] for now. Bootup / Start the computer, and follow these steps: 1. When you hear the computer start-up, there will be a message that flashes very quickly at the bottom of the screen, it will read; Press F2 or F12 or on other "Computers, the 'Key Sequence may be [F11]..." The area of your attention will be [F2] Key at the top of the keyboard. The F2 Key will open the CMOS / BIOS Setup. paul7of9_15.jpg 2. Once this screen appear, you will see a 'Listing" of different set-ups. There will be instructions in the [right] Help ? area. You be using the "Arrow Keys" to (Select and Choose Items). In the first screen, there will be on the (right of the screen). 3. Set Supervisor Password = This is the "Password Setting that will prevent anyone from getting into without authorization this area that you are in now, to "Change or Configure" CMOS or BIOS setting. 4. Set User Password = This Password is use for "Logins / User Accounts... You want to "Reset or Change the Supervisor Password. Do so, and to finish; remember to use the [F10 Key] to 'Save the Changes.' Thanks for using Fix' Ya, and I hope this fix it, paul7of9

When i turn on my emp thinkpad it's all black and on the top it says password but i dont know it.

Per Lenovo Support (they purchased IBM thinkpad a couple years ago)
ote: Do Not Forget Your Supervisor Password! If you forget your Supervisor password, there is no way to reset your password to enter the BIOS configuration. Setting a supervisor password automatically sets the hard drive password. If you do not remember your supervisor password you must have the system serviced to have the system board and hard drive replaced. Proof of purchase is required, and this repair is not covered under the warranty.

Supervisor password

A Supervisor password protects the system information stored in the BIOS. The user must enter the Supervisor password in order to get access to the ThinkPad BIOS Setup Utility in order to change the system configuration. If the Supervisor password is forgotten there is no way to reset it to enter the BIOS configuration. Setting a Supervisor password automatically sets the master Hard drive password. The following is the icon that comes up in the upper left corner if a Supervisor password is set:
A forgotten Supervisor password will prevent access to the ThinkPad BIOS setup utility. To regain access, the system will need to be serviced to have the system board and hard drive replaced. Proof of purchase is required, and this repair is not covered under the warranty.
