Mastertemp 400 NG heater - unused gas smell when firing

Whenever we turn on our pool heater, there is a smell coming from the heater that smells like gas. The gas company has determined it to be unused gas, not a leak. The pool company that installed the pool orders mastertemp heaters set up for lg and then if you want ng, you have to have it converted - this was done by the gas company when it was installed. Well, that's what they said was done. Why do we have this smell?

Ask the gas company for the conversion kit part part number they used.

SOURCE: I have a Pentair Mastertemp 250 pool heater with

This is an ignition flame falure code. Could be you don't have gas getting to the pilot, no spark to ignite the pilot or your ignition is not reading the flame. Sorry to say but it's probally time to get the pool guy out to look at it. Good luck.

SOURCE: heater cycles on / off

This could be a water flo problem. you need to chech to be sure your by-pass valve is closed down enough to force water threw heater, There is a internal by-pass that could be a problem also, or a bad pressure switch. If the by-pass isn't the problem then you should check these also.

SOURCE: Pentair MasterTemp 400 Heater Will run fine for

This reminds me of some of the High temp sensors ive replaced. I would start with checking the pumps flow to the heater. Make sure there are no abstructions and at least 35 GPM (gallons per minute) running to the heater. If your flow is too low, you will trip the high limit sensor after a short while.
This could also mean you need to clean out the heat exchanger. When an exchanger gets dirty, it blocks the flow of water, slowing it down and "super heating" itdue to the water being in contact with the exchanger for too long. This will also trip the high limit and call for service.
If both the above items check out, contact me @ and I will guide you further.

MasterTemp 400K BTU heater kicks on for 20sec. and starts shaking, then turns off and repeat itself. Everytime it kicks on we smell gas as well. Water flow seems to be OK in spa and pool.

Even though you are smelling gas it could mean the gas flow is not strong enough.
When you say the water flow seems good, have you cleaned your filter recently?

If you are somewhat handy you can troubleshoot this heater by taking off the front panel turning it on and looking up to the back of the circuit board.
When it shuts off it will have red lights next to abbreviated words such as hl1 hl2.

Whichever light or lights are red will point you in the right direction of the cause.

If the heater is "acting normal" with no failure codes and you smell gas, then I would bet it's the igniter. The fact that you smell gas indicates the heater does not have a failure in any of the safety circuits and wants to fire. It is just missing an ignition source or the gas you smell is not making it to the proper place to be ignited. Given these two options it is most often the igniter. Replacing the igniter is not difficult but it is a VERY delicate part and experience in handling it is benificial.

Moved heater from one pool to another an now its not working the induce draft is running an the igniter is glowing an the gas valve opens an you can smell gas so now what

You will need to check the size of the gas line. These heaters work on gas volume more than pressure. For a 400,000 any thing more than 30-50 foot you will probably need at least 1.5 to 2 inch supply line. It is always good to go big on the line to allow for other gas appliance's. I would check this first it is a common problem when upgrading to Low Nox.

Green light comes on , can smell gas and hear buzzing from igniter but shuts down after 3 seconds and green light goes out

Make sure you have no soot build up on your ignitor. It will conduct elect so you can hear a buzz instead of a clear spark. Without a clean spark it wont fire and for safty it shuts down to keep gas from building up in the cabnit.
