Toyota Highlander_ How to change plugs

The Toyota Highlander is available in three different engine sizes: 2.4, 3.0 and 3.3 liter. The basic technique for replacing spark plugs is used for both engine sizes, but depending on the engine size you need to remove different parts from the Toyota Highlander to gain access to the spark plugs.
  1. 1 Pull the hood release and raise the hood on the Highlander. Allow the engine plenty of time to cool.
  2. 2 Remove some components to reach the spark plugs. On a 3.3 liter engine, unscrew and remove the V-bank cover and intake air tank. On a 2.4 and 3.0 liter engine, remove the number one engine cover.
  3. 3 Locate the ignition coils and spark plug wires that connect directly to the spark plugs or directly to the engine in the Toyota Highlander. In 2001 and 2002 models, theses are on the front and back of the engine. On models made after 2002, the spark plugs are along the sides. Grab the ignition coils or spark plug wires by the thick plastic piece at the end of the wire. Squeeze the end and turn it to release it from the spark plug. Pull back to remove the plug from the engine.
  4. 4 Slide the spark plug socket over the spark plug. The most common size of spark plug socket used on a Toyota Highlander is 16mm. Turn the socket to the left to unscrew and remove the spark plug from the cylinder well.
  5. 5 Apply a thin coat of anti-seize compound to the spark plug thread and into the wire boot to reduce the chance of sticking.
  6. 6 Insert the spark plug into the well and manually turn the plug into place. If you cannot reach the plug well manually, insert the plug into the socket and extension and use the extension to turn the plug into place. Do not use a socket wrench or flexible extension for this process because their force damages the spark plug.
  7. 7 Connect the ignition coil or spark plug wire to the spark plug. Turn to lock it into place.
  8. 8 Continue this process for the rest of the spark plugs. Replace any removed items onto the engine and lower the hood.

Where is the spark plug located on my craftsman lawn tractor model 917.273360

James, it is at the front of the engine. It is next to the 4" by6" metal cover that says OHV. It is on the right hand side ( sitting on the tractor), There is a black wire the size of a pencil ( diameter ), hooked to it. It is set deep in the engines cylinder head. There is a rubber boot over the end of the spark plug. Remove the rubber boot, you will hace to grip it hard and pull it off. Then you will be able to remove it, using a deep 5/8" socket with a 4 to 6 inch extension.

Hope this helps, if you need more let me know.

I have a craftsman IC. The spark plug is out of wherever it needs to be inserted. One end is in place, but I'm not sure where the other half goes.

It sounds by your description that the spark plug has separated. If so it must be replaced. If the plug is still in the plug wire intact then you need to remove from plug wire, give it a cursory inspection for damage and reinsert it to finger tight. You will have to snug with a spark plug socket or if one is not available with a deep well socket. Most likely the size will be 5/8" if small or 13/16" for the bigger ones. To find the spark plug hole you will have to look on the head of the engine. This will most likely be on the front of the engine. for a single cylinder engine.

Spark plug cable is broken. The wire in the cable is still attached to the spark plug. I've tried pulling it but it is very tightly attached to the spark plug. I cannot find the appropriate socket...

Get a suitable pair of plyers, grip the plug wire where it is thick, on the jacket that is on the plug, and pull hard. Maybe twist a little, but not sideways, as you risk breaking the plug. It should come off.
What may happen is that you will get all the rubber, and the metal locking tap will stay on the plug. Then use a pair of needlenose plyers to remove it.

The plug size is usually a 13/16 or a 5/8.

Don't really worry if you break the ceramic part of the plug, you can just remove what is left with the socket, and put in a new plug.

Changing Spark Plugs on 1999 Honda Shadow 750

Yes, it is an 18mm plug but you will need to use the Honda Plug Tool which is part of the stock tool kit just below the seat. Use that and you will get all of the plugs out very easily.

if your using a spark plug socket, theres a rubber grommet inside to protect the ceramic plug. sometimes they can be a tight fit to seat properly.
