Engine turns over but wont start


It sounds as though you may have a sheared flywheel key. The keys are made of aluminum and shear easily if the flywheel is not tight. Remove top cover and flywheel retaining bolt/nut. Examine key for location with slot in crankshaft. If sheared, orient the flywheel slot and crankshaft slot so that a new key fits. Be sure flywheel and crankshaft mounting surfaces are clean and free of oil/grease. Tighten crankshaft retaining bolt/nut to 90 ft lbs. Flywheel posisition is maintained by friction between it and crankshaft.

I have an older 4 cycle Briggs and Stratton engine that needs points replaced. How do I remove the flywheel in order to get at the points? Thanks


You must remove recoil housing and flywheel retaining nut or nut assembly. a flywheel puller is recommended however a two person team will do; using two prybar system pry flywheel up or out away from engine block prying from opposite sides of flywheel just enough to remove flywheel end play but not ever enough to pop off flywheel. It is very important to not pry so hard as to ever break any component under or around bottom of flywheel. Now with the use of a brass punch or aluminum shaft equal to or larger that diameter of shaft where retaining nut was removed; person # 2 should us a small ball pin hammer or equivalent to strike brass punch or aluminum shaft to break tapered shaft from flywheel. Never us a large hammer as engine damage is likely. Usually one or two good solid strikes is all it takes so good luck.

Electric window motor doesn''t work needs replacement


Remove the visible bolt from the left side of the arm rest.


Remove the window switch/door lock/mirror controls by popping the entire panel out, may need to use a flathead screwdriver.


Slide panel off of door.


Pull vapor barrier loose on the bottom right side. This will expose a coiled spring and window motor. Tape the window in the up position using masking or packaging tape.


Mark a straight line across the coil spring, to help with realigning the new motor.


Use tool j-38864 connect it near outer part of coil sprint where it hooks to retainer or in a pinch use pounted vice grips at same location ensuring they are firmly locked on spring.


Force spring clockwise to disengage it from it's retainer point.


Pull spring slightly outward just enough to clear the retainer point and slowly let it uncoil counterclockwise.


Disconnect wire connector from right end of window motor.


Push the three plastic retainer points outward as you lift up on window motor to disengage from retainers careful not to break the plastic retainers comes out pretty easy

Install new motor into the plastic retainers, make sure it is fully seated.


Reconnect wire connector to new motor.


Use J38864 or vice grips to recoil spring, reseating it to retainer point as before.


Remove tape from window and test up/down switch.


Reseal vapor barrier in place as it was before.


Slide switch control back up through hole in door panel from where it mounts and slide door over the door handle.


Align retaining clips to holes and push them home with gentle raps of your hand start at the top and work downward on panel.


Replace the bolts in the arm rest and pop back in the controls.

Will not crank. will turn once , then lockup. have to turn the flywheel backwards and then cord will pull only once.


From your description sounds like the spring is broke. It is secured at both end may have slipped past retainer on one end or the other. If this is the case may be able to fix without buying new spring.

Clutch is going out need diagram to print out on how to replace it


Here are removal procedures. Can I send reinstall on another ticket? I don't think they will fit in one solution... Tranny REMOVAL

1.8L and 1.9L Engines See Figures 1, 2
  1. Disconnect both battery cables, negative cable first.
  2. Remove the battery and battery tray.
  3. Remove the engine air cleaner tube and the air intake resonator.
  4. Disconnect the speedometer cable at the transaxle.
  5. Remove the slave cylinder line-to- slave cylinder hose retaining clip, then disconnect the slave cylinder line from the slave cylinder hose and plug the hose.
  6. Disconnect the ground strap from the transaxle.
  7. Remove the tie wrap and unplug the three electrical connectors located above the transaxle.
  8. Remove the electrical connector support bracket.
  9. Install Engine Support Bar 014-00750 or equivalent, and attach it to the engine lifting eyes with suitable chains or cables.

  1. If equipped, remove the three nuts from the left-hand engine support bracket.
  2. Loosen the mount pivot nut and rotate the mount out of the way.
  3. Remove the three bolts and the left-hand engine support mount.
  4. Remove the two upper transaxle-to-engine bolts.
  5. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  6. Remove the front wheel and tire assemblies.
  7. Remove the inner fender splash shields.
  8. Drain the transaxle fluid and install the drain plug.
  9. Remove the halfshafts.
  10. Install Transaxle Plugs T88C-7025-AH or equivalent, between the differential side gears.
WARNING Failure to install the transaxle plugs may cause the differential side gears to become improperly positioned. If the gears become misaligned, the differential will have to be removed from the transaxle to align them.
  1. If equipped with the 1.8L engine, remove the intake manifold support bolts and the support.
  2. Remove the starter motor.
  3. Unfasten the gearshift stabilizer bar nut and washers. Remove the stabilizer bar and bracket from the transaxle.
  4. Unfasten the shift control rod-to-transaxle bolt and nut and remove the shift control rod from the transaxle.
  5. Remove both lower splash shields.
  6. Unfasten the transaxle mount-to-crossmember bolts and nuts and remove the lower crossmember (rear engine support).
  7. Position and secure a suitable transaxle jack under the transaxle.
  8. Remove the front transaxle mount and bracket.

  1. Remove the lower engine-to-transaxle bolts and slowly lower the transaxle out of the vehicle.

CLUTCH REMOVAL
  1. If the clutch assembly is to be reused, matchmark the pressure plate and the flywheel so they can be assembled in the same position.
  2. Install flywheel holding tool T84P-6375-A or equivalent, in a transaxle mounting hole on the engine and engage the tooth of the holding tool into the flywheel ring gear.

  1. Loosen the pressure plate-to-flywheel retaining bolts one turn at a time, in a crisscross pattern, until the spring tension is relieved, to prevent pressure plate cover distortion.
  2. Support the pressure plate and unfasten the retaining bolts. Remove the pressure plate and clutch disc from the flywheel.

If the flywheel shows any signs of overheating (blue discoloration) or if it is badly grooved or scored, it should be refaced or replaced.
  1. Inspect the flywheel, clutch disc, pressure plate, release bearing, pilot bearing and the clutch fork for wear. Replace parts as needed.

Chain saw pull start won't work


Remove the starter assembly from the engine and try to turn the flywheel by hand--it should move freely except when the piston is beginning compression. If the flywheel won't turn, then remove the muffler and check the piston skirt and cylinder for severe scoring. If it is, then suspect that the engine was run on straight gasoline. This damage will be quite expensive to repair as the cylinder, piston, and ring(s) will require replacement plus labor if you farm the work out. If the above check revealed a freely turning flywheel, then check the starter mechanism looking for a bound starter cord or other obstruction. If the spool can't be turned CCW, then suspect that the spring is over-wound and can't be turned further--remove the starter cord after wedging the spool so that it won't unwind completely, the loosen the wedge and turn the spool CW about 5 or 6 turns, then re-wedge the spool again. Reinstall the cord (replace it if badly worn) by melting the cord end, then tying an overhand knot to retain it. Wind the cord CCW 5 or 6 turns, then thread the cord though the cord port, slide the handle on, melt the cord end, and tie another overhand knot to retain the handle. Hope some of this helps!

How to fit a new clutch into a ford escort 1300cc 1994


1991-96 Models
See Figures 1, 2 and 3
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  3. Remove the transaxle assembly.
  4. If the clutch assembly is to be reused, matchmark the pressure plate and the flywheel so they can be assembled in the same position.
  5. Install flywheel holding tool T84P-6375-A or equivalent, in a transaxle mounting hole on the engine and engage the tooth of the holding tool into the flywheel ring gear.

To install:
  1. If removed, install a new pilot bearing using a suitable installation tool.
  2. If removed, install the flywheel. Make sure the flywheel and crankshaft flange mating surfaces are clean. Tighten the flywheel retaining bolts to 71-76 ft. lbs. (96-103 Nm) on the 1.8L engine or 54-67 ft. lbs. (73-91 Nm) on the 1.9L engine.
  3. Clean the pressure plate and flywheel surfaces thoroughly. Position the clutch disc and pressure plate into the installed position and support them with a dummy shaft or clutch aligning tool. If the clutch assembly is being reused, align the matchmarks that were made during the removal procedure.
  4. Install the pressure plate-to-flywheel retaining bolts. Tighten the bolts in the correct sequence to 13-20 ft. lbs. (18-26 Nm). Remove the alignment tool.

  1. If the release bearing was removed, lubricate the release fork where it contacts the bearing and install the bearing in the fork.
  2. Install the transaxle assembly.
  3. Lower the vehicle.
  4. Bleed the hydraulic clutch system, if needed.
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.
  6. Road test the vehicle and check the clutch for proper operation.

REMOVAL:
  1. Lift clutch pedal to uppermost position to disengage clutch and brake pedal pivot shaft.
  2. Push clutch and brake pedal pivot shaft forward and unhook clutch release lever cable from clutch and brake pedal pivot shaft and allow it to slowly swing rearward.
  3. Raise and support vehicle.
  4. Remove clutch release lever dust shield.
  5. Disconnect clutch release lever cable from clutch release shaft.
  6. Remove retaining clip, then clutch release lever cable from flywheel housing.
  7. Remove starter motor from flywheel housing, then engine rear plate to front lower flywheel housing bolts.
  8. Remove transmission.
  9. Remove flywheel housing back just far enough to clear clutch pressure plate, then remove housing.
  10. Remove clutch release shaft from flywheel housing by pulling it through window in flywheel housing until retainer spring disengages from pivot.
  11. Remove clutch release hub and bearing from clutch release shaft.
  12. Loosen six clutch pressure plate bolts evenly to release spring tension gradually and avoid distorting clutch pressure plate. If same clutch pressure plate is to be installed, mark plate and flywheel so pressure plate can be installed in its original position.
  13. Remove clutch pressure plate and clutch disc from flywheel.
INSTALLATION:
  1. Position clutch disc and pressure plate assembly on flywheel, noting following:
    1. Three flywheel housing to block dowels on flywheel must be properly aligned with clutch pressure plate.
    2. Bent, damaged or missing flywheel housing to block dowels must be replaced.
    3. tart clutch pressure plate bolts but do not tighten.
    4. Avoid touching clutch disc face, dropping parts or contaminating parts with oil or grease.
    5. Align clutch disc using suitable alignment tool inserted in pilot bearing.
    6. To avoid clutch pressure plate distortion, alternately tighten bolts a few turns at a time, until they are all tight, then tighten to specifications.

  2. Install transmission to flywheel housing.
  3. Install engine rear plate to flywheel front lower housing bolts, then connect clutch release cable to flywheel housing and connect retaining clip.
  4. Connect clutch release lever cable to clutch release shaft, then install clutch release lever dust shield.
  5. Install starter motor.
  6. Lower vehicle, then install clutch release lever cable as follows:
    1. Lift clutch pedal to disengage clutch and brake pedal pivot shaft.
    2. Push clutch and brake pedal pivot shaft forward and hook end of clutch release lever cable over rear of clutch and brake pedal pivot shaft.

  7. Cycle clutch pedal several times to adjust clutch release lever cable

Oil on sprark plugs


  1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
  2. Remove the valve cover, using the proper procedures.
  3. Remove the camshaft, shims and rockers, if equipped, using the proper procedures.
  4. Remove the spark plugs.
  5. Rotate the engine to Top Dead Center (TDC) for each cylinder's seals that are being replaced; e.g., if replacing the No. 2 cylinder valve seals, have the No. 2 cylinder at TDC. Use a coat hanger put down into the cylinder to determine when it is at TDC.
  6. Attach a fixture at the flywheel or the front of the engine to prevent the engine from rotating. Make sure the fixture damages no components.
  7. Thread an adapter into the spark plug holes that can be hooked up to a shop compressor air hose.
  8. Apply 90 psi of shop compressor air to the adapter hose. This is done to keep the valves from dropping down into the cylinder when the valve springs are removed.
CAUTIONTo avoid personal injury, wear eye and ear protection. Keep hands and clothing away from engine parts that rotate, in case the engine does rotate from the cylinder air pressure.
  1. With the cylinder under pressure, remove the valve spring retainer and the spring, using a spring compressor tool. Hitting the spring retainer with a soft hammer may help loosen the valve keepers, if the keeper will not move downward when trying to compress the spring.
  2. With the valve spring removed, remove the oil seal.
To Install:
  1. Install a new seal, using Toyota Special Service Tool (SST) 09201-41020, or equivalent.
  2. Reinstall the valve springs (See Valves).
  3. Release the air pressure and reverse the removal procedures to complete installation.
  4. Connect the negative battery terminal, start the engine and check for leaks.
