Question about Computers & Internet
The Manual for your LG DVD Home Ent unit says: Some DVD+/-RW, DVD+/-R or CDRW, CD-R cannot be played on this unit due to the recording quality or physical condition of the disc, or the characteristics of the recording device and authoring software" So If what you burn on your PC can be played on another stand alone DVD Player Recorder than I would say that the problem is just that, not compatible media. Codecs, Firmware Update, Recording software used and Region Code can play part in problems, just depends on how much you can eliminate yourself.

Hey Andy, Sometimes when you burn DVD's or CD's with newer burners, you will undoubtedly burn them set to the highest burning speed. Your DVD player may not be able to read them because of this. Try burning a new DVD set to a lower speed. I have to do this when burning DVD's for my sister. Her DVD player is older and when I burn at a slower speed, she is able to read the DVD with no problem.

What is happening is that the dvdrom firmware or the laser is failing and cannot read the disc; and because the pc is using all the system resources trying to do so; it appears that you cannot get anything to run, making it seem as if the hard drive is faulty also, though not the case. You will need to replace the drive if this is a common occurance, as the life of a dvd drive nowadays dependant on use is aprox 2 years, because as the prices come down so does the quality of the laser required to burn and read discs.

SOURCE: wont burn dc or dvd
Have you tried installing the original software did it have one if NOT. Then go to google type LG DRIVE 16 HL-DT-ST DVDRRW GSA-4166B Software. See what google comes up with you will be surprised. The reason why its not burning as you say is because you are using a foreign software. I hate saying this but sometimes hardware can be sentimental like your wife/husband. Goodluck your prolem lies with software not hardware.
