SOURCE: Ford truck shifter locked in park

For the column shifter it is on the left hand side of the steering wheel column behind the knee panel.
For the console shifter it is under the cup holder, think it is still on the left side.

For either of them, the shift interlock solenoid has a white button on it, that you can press and it will release the gear shift lever.

This is for the 2004 New Body style truck, if you have a 2004 Heritage or Lightning, it is slightly different.

Shift solenoid

Are you referring to the shift lock solenoid?? cant get it out of park?? you should hear clicking noise every time you hit the brake pedal. If no noise is heard, that the solenoid could be faulty, but it also could be other things, such as wiring for it, or brake light switch etc. Have you spilled anything into the center cup holder, such as soda?? that will get into the console and stick your solenoid. the solenoid is located under the shifter indicator. that thing that sais P R N D 2 1. You need to pop the whole thing up and solenoid is under the finisher. Its a part of the shifter mechanism, but it can be replaced separately.

Can't get my car our of park its a 2000 Lincoln ls v6

When you operate the brakes, does the brake light come on?
If not, then check and/or replace your brake switch (located towards the top of the brake pedal).

If your brake light works, then check the gear shift lock solenoid operation. Check for power to the solenoid, when the brake pedal is depressed and check the solenoid movement. Replace if necessary.

Shifter is stuck in park. had to remove little cover over hole, by the shifter, to insert key into hole, to get shifter to remove shifter from park. what causes this and is it something i can fix on my...

I believe this vehicle is equipped with a shift lock that necessitates depressing the brake pedal before it can be shifted out of "Park". This is a safety feature designed into almost every car made nowadays to prevent unintended movement of the vehicle when shifting out of "Park". The Shift Lock solenoid is triggered by the brake light switch located near the top of the brake pedal arm. Starting with the "basics", check to see if the brake lights are working (they should illuminate when the brake pedal is pressed. If the brakes lights do not come on. then proceed to check the brake/stop light fuse. Replace if needed. Once the brake lights are functioning, the shift lock should "disengage" and allow you to shift out of "Park" when the brake pedal is pressed. If the fuses are okay, but still no brake lights, then the Brake Light Switch may need to be replaced.

Brake lights working but won't shift out of "Park"? Check for a separate fuse for the Shift Lock Solenoid. Replace if needed. Otherwise the Shift Lock Solenoid may need to be replaced. This will require disassembly of the console to access the part.

Check the little pump below the brake booster for running and the coolant valve for movement.

Both hoses to fire wall should be hot.

Check for air lock in system.

Blend doors on this vehicle stop working....common complaint.

To verify Blend door movement, turn on ignition with engine off.

Run temp to max and the min..... listen under glove box for ( sliding ) motor noise as door swings from hot to cold.

This is a digital system needing a Jaguar scanner for diagnosis.

Shifter wont come out of park

the lock mechanism for part is operated by a small solenoid, this solenoid is powered by the brake light circuit, so when the brakes are pressed the solenoid releases the part lock by pulling the electric solenoid plunger back, so if u have no brake light then the car remains locked in park, check and make sure u have brake lights, if not check the brake light switch under the dash above the brake pedal, it should have 12+volts in and out of the switch when the brake pedal is depressed, if no power out of switch but has 12 volts in the switch is defective or out of adjusment.

firstly, there should be a small vertical slot next to the shifter labelled "shift lock". Stick your ignition key in there and jiggle it while you try to depress the shifter button. That should get you out of 'park'. Now, when you say a brake lamp is on, do you mean on the dashboard or one of the actual brake lamps?

You must remove the console yes, and you need to replace the shift lock solenoid.
