I have a Linksys router and it really dosn't tell me a lot about hooking it up! Can anyone help? MDL# EZXs55W It is a five port. The tech connected the cable and the eithernet cable to the modem. I tried to connect the second computer to the router with the eithernet cable and a power cord. The only other thing that will connect to the router is another eithernet cable. I have also tried connecting the eithernet comming from my computer to the router as well as the second computer. Then connecting a short eithernet cable from the router to the modem. Nothing so far works.
Thanks
Bob

- OK! I am an old guy and sometimes do not understand. So! What I am hearing you say is that the cable from the provider is to be hooked into the modem. Next The jumper wire should run from the modem to the uplink on the router. Then the computers should be hooked to connections 1-4
If I am correct with this statement then I still have the second computer problen not comming online.
Thanks

Clarification Request

This statement is incorrect:
Basically, you need to plug one end of a network cable into the modem and the other into the Uplink jack on your switch. Then plug your computers into jacks 1-4. For some reason Linksys disables jack #5.

Port 5 on the 5 port switch/hub is the uplink port which allows the unit to broadcast IP addresses when it is connectec to a router.

The 5 port switch will not broadcast IPaddresses when hooked up directly to the cable modem. Bob, You need to purchase a router.

The confusion here is that you may be calling the 5 port switch a "router" which it is not. A router ia an appliance that when hooked up to the cable modem, it will broadcast up to 256 IP addresses for 256 computers. You need to purchase a router.

If , after you get the router, you need to set the 5 port hub up, let me know.

You need to purchase a router to be able to use more than one computer on the internet. The linksys wireless routers are MDL# WRT54G, WRT54G2 is the newest and faster one.

Or you can purchase D-Link , NetGear wireless routers, check for sales.

Bob,

There are 3 versions of that router. Can you look at the sticker on the router and let us know which version you have?

Thanks

The MDL# EZXs55W is a 5 port hub, it is not a router. The 5 port hub will not broadcast IP addresses without a router connected to it.

Do you have a separate unit that is a router?

Great !

But if you have trouble installing the cd, follow these instructions:
Router setup
You do not have to use the cd.

Shutdown your PC. Unplug the power from the router and the cable modem.
Wait 30 sec. then plug in the power to the cable modem, wait 30 sec. then plug the power to the router. Wait till you have "Internet" light then restart your PC. The PC should pick up an IP address and you should be able to get on-line. This is if you have a cable service provider.

If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.
Thanks, Joe

Follow up to Joed911...

I should have checked first. It is only a switch. Here is a link to the install guide from Linksys: http://downloads.linksysbycisco.com/downloads/ezxs55w_qi,2.pdf

Basically, you need to plug one end of a network cable into the modem and the other into the Uplink jack on your switch. Then plug your computers into jacks 1-4. For some reason Linksys disables jack #5.

let me know if this does not help

- Bob,

Sorry, I thought your modem was also a router. If not my solution will not work.
