Question about GE D52GW12 52" Rear Projection HDTV-Ready Television

GE D52GW12 52 in. Rear Projection HDTV-Ready

I had the same problem with GE TV. Sparks, smoke.. I found a gray box (4x2x2) in the left rear of the computer board (facing the back of the tv) marked with a 4 digit number 3682 (I think). the top corner of the box was charred. Is this an expensive replacement. I didn't see any recall on the GE site for this TV but this is truely a major fire hazard.

Mine gave a high pitched whine and then went black, accompanied by a sharp smell of smoke. Further attempts to turn it on returned the same whine and smell. I'm loathe to open it if it's still something they'll fix.

I have the same problem. It started to turn off after a few minutes, but if I tried again after a few minutes, it would turn on fine. Now it won't turn on at all and I can smell burnt electrical.

For anyone trying to help.....the only part numbers I could find on the piece is 3C30-065...49656

My set started turning itself off. It would then fade on and off. Now when I turn it back on, I hear a sizzling noise followed by a burning smell. The power light then fades off.

GE D52GW12 52 in. I have had this tv for just over 3 years and the exact same thing just happened to us this week. TV cut off and on, orange flashes reflected on the wall, zapping sound, burning smell. Beyond heartbroken as we love this tv! I will definitely check out the consumer recall site but does anyone know if this is fixable?

Please report these problems to the consumer product safety commision. I beleieve this common problem with large sparks and flames warrants a recall.

hi

i agree with you about the fire hazard and i had many feedbacks about this tv, mostly conscious about fire hazard too.

i would suggest that in light of owning a high-def tv, it would be significantly appropriate to place this in a room with airconditioning as to diminish the heat this hdtv produces.

about the issue of the hdtv turning off, if you suspect the transformer and other parts to be the reason for the tv to malfunction, why not bring it to a certified service center which handles GE hdtv. i would say that it may be a pain but as to think of the outcome, it may be worth it.

hope this helps.

I have a projection tv that has a module that sparks on the circuit board when it is turned on.

Most likely in the high tension module some wires are too close to the board - move the components apart and put some ceramic insulators. But in any case fix it quickly or you risk burning your house down.

Sparks and burning plastic

Leave the back off and try to power the set on...be ready to pull the plug. Whatever is sparking/smoking is your bad part. On this TV I would suspect the flyback transformer or grey rectangular polyester capacitor mounted in front of a heatsink on the left.

You need a new replacement flyback. They cost about 50 dollars at the following link , and they provide free tech support so you can do the repair yourself which takes about 30 minutes from start to finish and requires only basic soldering skills. Heres the link.
