Yes they are.
If you have a specific microwave trouble question, please post a new help request here on FixYa and include the full model number from the tag in the cooking cavity or elsewhere on the microwave, such as the door frame, controller frame, etc. and detailed symptoms and when they occur.

a diode is a one way or non return electrical valve
open circuit one way no circuit the other
if you do not have that , junk it as it has blown

My 5 yr old Whirlpool microwave stopped heating food. All other lights, displays, fan and turntable work. What could be the trouble?

If you do not have any experience in the repair of microwave ovens do not engage in their repairs because it is one of the most dangerous household appliances and the consequences can be disastrous. According to your description, low voltage circuit (220V or 110V) works well (light, turntable...). Obviously the problem is in a high voltage (HV) circuit which is made up of the magnetron, HV diode (rectifier), HV capacitor and HV fuse or protect diode. Failure is in any of these components in "HV circuit" or in the main board.

Whirlpool microwave keeps opening high voltage diode

Obviously the problem is in a high voltage (HV) circuit which is made up of the magnetron, HV diode (rectifier), HV capacitor and HV fuse or protect diode. Failure is in any of these components in "HV circuit" or sometimes in interlock switch assembly or PC Board.

First, you must be sure which diode is blowed, reactifier or protect diode.

To check magnetron following this procedure:

Discconect the mains supply.
Check that the capacitor is discharged (by resistor 100 ohm / 10W or more).
Discconect the magnetron.
Measure the resistence between the disconnected terminals (should be app. 0.5 ohm).
Measure the resistance between the supply terminals (both) and earth. The resistance should be infinite.

Ge microwave mod. #JVM1851BH06. i ohmed the capicitor 2 meg ohm and increased to 11 meg ohm. I also measured the diode which i believe branches off one leg of capacitor it shows open resistance O.L. both...

I'd say your diode is bad but your capacitor may be good. You need to test it further - as described below.

In order to get reliable measurements to make a determination about the condition of the components, each should have at least one lead removed from the circuit. If not, your meter will read the through the rest of the circuit - and not be limited to the diode or capacitor under test.

To check a diode: Set the meter to to the lowest scale (Rx1) and touch black (-) probe to the cathode of the diode (the end with a band around the diode body) and the red (+) to the anode lead to reverse bias the diode. The meter should indicate "OL" or high resistance. Reverse the meter probes so that RED (+) is on the cathode lead and black (-) is on the anode to forward bias the diode. The meter should read a very low resistance - approaching 0 ohms. Diodes should conduct in one direction only - and the other is should look "open" If it conducts or is open in both directions, it is defective. Zener diodes can be checked with an ohm meter, but need a variable voltage supply and are required to be in a circuit (instead of out of circuit like a standard diode) for accurate testing. A link to zener diode testing here.

To check a capacitor: Set the meter to the lowest scale (Rx1) and touch probes to capacitor leads. The meter should indicate "OL" or high resistance and show steadily decreasing resistance before increasing to OL or high resistance again. Swap probes from the meter on the capacitor leads and "OL or high resistance indication should change to an even lower amount of resistance thas before before returning to "OL" or high resistance indication. These are test result characteristics of a good capacitor under test.

I hope this helps & good luck! Please rate my reply - thanks!

Microwave is plugged in, but getting no power, circuit ok, cannot find a fuse on the microwave.

Normally if no power is indicated, it is due to a blown fuse but if fuse has blown be careful, it because there is something wrong. Mostly its due to a problem in the power circuit. Can either be the magnatron or the diode capacitor combination.Normally the capacitor goes faulty causing the HV diode to blow. Replace the two components(diode and cap.). If it happens again replace the magnatron. Microwave truely dangerous and needs proffesional att. email me if you want to go ahead yourself

Replace diode

I rarely suggest field repairs on microwave ovens because of the possibility of microwave energy being released. With all due respect, if you don't know all capacitors must be discharged before working on circuits, you should probably leave this alone. Think with me... If a diode burned, what caused it? You must trace that back to its root. It takes a severe overvoltage to burn out a diode.

Micro doesn't heat

When the microwave sounds okay, but there's no heat, one of the internal door switches, the high voltage circuitry, or the circuit board may have a problem. To resolve this problem, you need the assistance of a qualified appliance repair technician.
