So it idles fine when the choke is on but not when its off, am I correct.


When the choke is on, the butterfly on the carb is closed. Meaning that Air is restricted upon entering the carb. This is telling me you still have a fueling issue. As when the butterfly is closed, the engine is getting the optimum amount of fuel and air to burn. However, when you release the choke, you open up the butterfly on the carb mean more air can get into the carb, in turn this draws more fuel through the carb to create that optimum burn.

Yours however isn't getting the fuel it needs when the butterfly is open, meaning its getting too much air and not enough fuel. Check and clean carb, replace any fatigued gaskets and diaphragms.

I put one in a 1970 Chevelle. I bought the hand choke cable with pull lever and under dash mounting bracket. Mounted pull lever under the dash, drilled a hole in the firewall as high as I could, ran the cable out to the engine compartment. Mounted the holding bracket to the motor as close to carb as possible on the intake, then attached to the choke arm that works the butterfly plate in the carb throat. Cut to fit as tight as possible with butterfly plate closed and push lever all the way in. As you pull the hand lever out inside the car, it opens the butterfly plate to achieve the optimum air fuel mixture you desire to make the engine run smoothly. Sometimes you must go the opposite, lever out and plate closed, depending on the way the carb is set up, and work it the opposite way.

best way is to remove the carbs ! get 4 x 4mm drill bits , set carbs on a wide tickover gap on butterflies until you can get the drill bits in the gaps and adjust till all 4 carbs are set the same gaps just slightly touching the butterflie bottom edge and the drill bits trapped between them and carb venturies ! then return the tickover back to shut on the butterflies and look and see if they are all opening and closing together and gaps same after several times ! should be correct if all links are ok ! final tickover setting when fitted on bike to about 600 to 800 rpm ! while the carbs are off you could strip and clean them if you wish ! hope you understand this ! ?? cheers P...

Remove air filter, look down carb. Choke butterfly is on top. When choked, butterfly closes opening. When choke off, butterfly up, you can see the throttle butterfly.

Craftsman riding mower dies after it gets warmed up


Check the choke. Typically these are automatic types on most new mowers. The choke is closed during cold starts then automatically open as the engine warms (think of it like a car that fast-idles in the winter, then slows down as it warms...it's not exactly the same thing, but in theory works on the same principle).
What could be happening with your problem is that the choke is stuck closed or partially closed, and remains closed after the engine warms. When the choke is closed when the engine is warm, it floods the engine with fuel and stalls (and can be difficult to restart, if you can get it to restart).


To test if this is your issue, operate it until it's warm and quits. Remove the air filter and check that the butterfly valve at the top of the carburetor is open. If it's closed, open it all the way (might have to put a screwdriver, or something in there to hold it open), then try to restart it. If it's open all the way, there is likely a fuel flow restriction to the carb, or in the carb, but these problems typically cause problems running the engine hot or cold.

Two recommendations.
1. Remove carburetor, and clean with spray carb cleaner. The choke is the butterfly valve visible where the air filter attaches. Check the linkage for debris, bent or restricted linkage. After cleaning and re installation, check for free movement of butterfly choke valve.
2. Prevention. There is not a lot that can be done, but to clean the carb/choke and throttle linkage during spring tune up before first use. May require more cleaning depending on amount of use. ALWAYS USE 100% GAS, NO ETHANOL. If you must use ethanol because 100% gas in unavailable, always mix with an additive that neutralizes the effect of the ethanol. Infrequently used engines (unlike cars) that use ethanol are prone to problems because the fuel system retains water. Carburetors do not like water, cause corrosion, and repairs can be costly. For example, Someone just gave me a nice (fairly new) Bolens Riding Mower (38" B&S engine - worth about $800 ) that would not run, they just got tired of it not running right and the cost of repair shop work was about $200. I bought a $65 carb on Amazon and now I've got a nice new riding mower. They saved $.50/gal on gas and I saved $740 on a new mower...yeah, baby!

Can't get it started, it has gas, oil, new spark plug. I sprayed starter fluid in it and it will start right up and die right away after the fluid is gone. acts like it's not getting fuel.


Remove the air fillter and look in to see if the choke butterfly is closeing if it is then it is a fueling problemRemove the carb and take out the main jet valve in the centre of the carb. Blow out the holes and make sure they and the rest of the carb is 100% spot less rebuild and refit also clean the air fillter and this hopefully should sort out your probleml davidson lawn mower tech

Briggs & stratton engine will not remain running


You have one of the infamous automatic choke Briggs carbs. These are supposed to close that butterfly that you describe, which is actually the choke until it is running, then it's supposed to keep it open. The problems is, if the diaphragm in the carburetor starts getting hard, or leaks, it'll kill the operation of the choke. They are known for their unreliablility to the point of where it's a shock to find one that actually works. You can fix it by replacing the diaphragm inside the carburetor, or by putting a spring on it that holds it open unless you manually choke it to start it.

Sounds like a fouled needle seat, or the float bowl is failing.

Start with:

Pulling your Carb, and cleaning it out. COMPLETELY.
A ton of people think "a shot of carb cleaner, and a gasket kit" is a carb fix. It is NOT, and WILL NOT fix a carb, if the problem isn't gaskets, and shots of cleaner!

Meaning, if she is running too rich, then too much fuel (as you said), and fouling plugs, remember there are only a VERY few things in the carb anyway as it is.

1. Needle Seat
2. Fuel Float Bowl
3. Butterflies
4. Fuel Ports
5. Air Ports
6. Gaskets/Diaphragms.

My advice: (This assumes you HAVE NOT ADJUSTED YOUR CARB OUT OF DEFAULT!)

Pull the carb (Carefully!) and tear it COMPLETELY down (Carefully!). Note where stuff went, take your time, be patient.

When you have everything but the butterfly plates out, run some Gum-Out through each and every port, after you made sure to pull the Float Bowl, and the Needle Valve (and remembered how they went back in there!). Take some compressed air, and follow through (CAREFULLY!) on each and every port. Clean the very TIP of the Needle Valve. Shake your plastic Float Bowl. Does it have liquid inside? She has a hole in her. REPLACE!

If not, then this exercise was cleaning crud/residue that is ALWAYS building up inside carbs in 2/4-stroke engines world wide, every day. NOW do a "carb gasket rebuild".

Note: Remember that sometimes, crud/junk is testy, and stubborn as a mule to get out. Double check any screens above/below your Needle Seat and Valve. Remember that Needle Valves come with solid tips, and some with rubber tips. Regardless, be careful, and clean thoroughly! A Needle Seat that isn't getting closed, is a Needle Valve that is letting WAY too much fuel in!
