Why is my video tape giving sound but not pic to tv?

Chances are the video head needs cleaning. You can buy a head cleaning tape or you can do it manually. To do it manually you will need to buy a can of Servisol Video 40 (you can get this online or from electrical parts shops). You remove the top cover only of the VCR. You can now see the video head. Spray the Servisol on the video head surfaces. You don't need a lot and you can turn the spinning head by hand to get full coverage. You can also spray and clean the surfaces that the tape touches. If you don't know which, with the top cover off insert and play a video and watch which parts touch the tape. You can use a cotton bud to clean hard to get places or if you see visible dust or dirt. Once done leave the surfaces to dry. You can then try a tape. Pick an old one, but not one with damage on it. If you see sparkles, on the picture clean the head again. It will take a lot of cleaning if the room in which it operates is a one where a smoker lives. It should operate for several months before needing another clean.

How to clean a VCR tape machine.

You just rented a tape and your VCR will not track properly or you tried to record a tape and it would not play back. You have a dirty machine.

Remove the power. Remove the top cabinet by removing all the screws on the back and probably a few on the bottom. Once the top is off look to see where the video tape comes into the machine. Directly ahead of the input is the video drum assembly. It should be about 2 or 3 inches in diameter and be directly in front of the tape slot. It is very fragile and should never have any cleaning device moved up and down on it.

Once you locate the video drum you should saturate a cotton swab with a 100% alcohol solution and while turning the drum slowly with the swab pressed against the video drum you should be able to clean the heads.

The heads are very small and very fragile. Any vertical movement will break them. After cleaning the video heads move to the erase head, CTL head and audio head.

The erase head is located to the left of the tape path entry to the video drum assembly. The CTL head is located with the audio head on the right side of the tape exit from the video drum assembly. Using a swab saturated with alcohol clean all these heads.

You should also clean the tape path and load mechanism ( the tracks that the tape guides slide on). Clean the pinch roller and capstan.

All cleaning supplies such as 100 percent alcohol and lint free cleaning swabs are available at .

This should complete the cleaning of your VCR. If all went well the unit should now work.

Thanks for using FixYa and for the great rating.

VHS loads and begins play - fuzzy lines immediately and screen turns blue - is this fixable? If so, what do you recommend?

Have you tried a head cleaning tape in vcr as fault might be due to dirt on video head or on the acl head, if this does not clear fault video heads could be faulty is could be costley.

Dew means...humidity in camera. Power goes to Off for protection because tape or video head can be damaged if humidity at video head. Blow Dryer for 2-3 minutes in camera while in cassette compartment is Open. Hope after that camera will be ok.

Dont see Video only Audio

The video head may still be dirty even after using the cleaning tape. Take the top cover off. The video head will be the rotating drum about 1.5 inches diameter. Use a lint free cloth- dish towel etc, moistened with rubbing alcohol, and rotate the head a few turns. The actual pickup surfaces are at the bottom of this drum unit- you can see them- there will be at least two.

Anyway, if you look at your cloth, and see some black material, indeed the head was dirty. Let the head dry for several minutes, then do a trial play again. If your picture returns, then good- if not try cleaning a couple more times. Heads do eventually wear out, and other problems can also cause the no video.

Refering to my last post

Screen will be blue. It Is known as video mute What happens when you play a cassette now? If you are still getting sound, and no picture, then the video heads are dirty. Get a good Wet Type Cleaning cassete and clean the Video heads. Do 2-3 runs of the tape, and check if picture is now visible.
