1. Log into the router. To do this you will need to open your web browser and enter http://192.168.0.1

You can choose between standard 64-bit or 12b-bit encryption keys. Below are the configuration options for 64-bit WEP. A passphrase or a manual key can be used

NOTE: To enter a manual WEP key you will need to enter hexadecimal values (A-F and 0-9). Example: 64-bit hexadecimal keys are exactly 10 characters in length. (123654ACDE is a valid strong of 10 characters for 64-bit encryption).

To automatically generate a 64-bit WEP key, enter in a Passphrase (keyword- ex. homegateway). And click the [Generate Keys] option. Once you do this, the Gateway will dynamically generate 4 keys. Simply configure the Default Key to the one key that you will be using across your network.

5. Select the Open System, Shared Key or Automatic from the [Authentication] drop-down menu. Note in most cases you want it set to Automatic.

For more security, you can use 128-bit WEP encryption. To use this mode, select the [128 bit (26 hex digits)] from theWEP Key Length drop-down menu option and the configuration section will be displayed. 128-bit encryption requires a longer key than 64-bit encryption. Keys are defined by entering in a strong in HEX (hexadecimal- using characters 0-9, A-F) or ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange – alphanumeric characters) format. ASCII format is provided so you can enter a string that is easier to remember. The ASCII string is converted to HEX for use over the network. You can manually enter in the 26-digit hexadecimal key.

Example: 128-bit hexadecimal keys are exactly 26 characters in length. ( 234FEDCBA12340013333389319 is a valid string of 26 characters for 128-bit encryption).

NOTE: If you are having a difficult time getting the wireless connection up after enabling WEP- Please confirm that you have configured the SAME WEP key on both the Gateway and Client card.

WEP keys are chosen by a network administrator. WEP keys are set on Wi-Fi routers, adapters and other wireless network devices. Sounds like your wireless network is setup to require a password (it has encryption) most commenly used is WPA, WEP and WPA2, you will have to ask the person who setup the network for the password.

Here is some more information from the NETGEAR site on WEP encryption for a wireless network:

What is WEP Encryption for Wireless Networks? Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) is a security protocol for wireless networks that encrypts transmitted data . It's easy to configure. Without any security your data can be intercepted without difficulty.
However, WEP was an early attempt to secure wireless networks, and better security is now available such as DES, VPN, and WPA. See the Guide to Internet Security to learn about network security.
WEP has three settings: Off (no security), 64-bit (weak security), 128-bit (a bit better security). WEP is not difficult to crack, and using it reduces performance slightly.
If you run a network with only the default security, where WEP is turned off, any of your neighbors can immediately log on to your network and use your Internet connection.
  • For wireless devices to communicate, all of them must use the same WEP setting. (40-bit and 64-bit WEP encryption are the same thing - 40-bit devices can communicate with 64-bit devices.)
While there is no extra performance cost to encrypting the longer key, there is a cost to transmitting the extra data over the network. 128-bit security is not much more difficult than 64-bit to crack, so if you are concerned about performance, consider using 64-bit. If you're very concerned about security, use WPA, which replaces WEP with a protocol that is - given current technology - impossible to crack. The WEP concept of passphrase is introduced so that you do not have to enter complicated strings for keys by hand. The passphrase you enter is converted into complicated keys. Choose passphrases with the same care you would important passwords.
  • With 128-bit encryption, you need to enter a passphrase to generate each key.
  • All four keys must be specified, because WEP switches between them to make your traffic more difficult to break.
  • All devices within your LAN must use the same passphrases (i.e., the same keys).
WEP is not necessary if you have a gaming console such as PlayStation or Xbox, and there are no other computers on the network.

Not able to connect the sons Nitendo DSi to the internet. They are asking for the WEP Key but on my home hub there is only a WPA Key. BT have told me to connect to you to ask for support.


If your using WPA and your Nintendo DS only supports WEP Encryption theres no way you can connect it to the internet. WEP encryption is different from WPA.

WEP key uses hexadecimal - using characters 0-9, A-F or ASCII format. The ASCII format is easier to remember. The ASCII string is converted to HEX over the network.

Example of WEP key encryption are:

*64-bit hexadecimal keys are exactly 10 characters in length. (12345678FA is a valid string of 10 characters for 64-bit encryption.)
*128-bit hexadecimal keys are exactly 26 characters in length. (456FBCDF123400122225271730 is a valid string of 26 characters for 128-bit encryption.)
*64-bit ASCII keys are exactly 5 characters in length (DMODE is a valid string of 5 characters for 64-bit encryption.)
*128-bit ASCII keys are exactly 13 characters in length (2002HALOSWIN1 is a valid string of 13 characters for 128-bit encryption.)

WPA Key is entered as a pass phrase between 8 to 63 alphanumeric characters in the ASCII format at both ends of the wireless connection. Although PSK accepts a minimum of eight characters, for proper security, it is a good idea to use ample length and should not use a commonly known phrase. This phrase is used to generate session keys that are unique for each wireless client.

To resolved the issue you have an option to change the WirelessSettings on your router to WEP instead of WPA since WEP is also a secured netwrok. however you need to keep in mind that if you change the encryption you need to configure all othere device connected to the router via WPA and change the settings to WEP.

Whats my WEP key


WEP keys are keys provided by the router. It's basically a 10-58 letters / number code that you need in order to access a WEP enabled internet connection.

If it's your router then it's usually on the router itself.

First off make sure your wireless connection is working
1. On the Setup tab of the Router’s web-based utility, click the Enable radio button next to WEP. Then click the Edit WEP Settings button.
2. You will see the 2.4GHz, 54g, Wireless-G (WEP) screen (Figure C-1). Next to Default Transmit Key, select which WEP key (1-4) will be used when the
Router sends data. Make sure the receiving device is using the same key.
3. For the WEP Encryption drop-down box, select the level of WEP encryption you wish to use, 64-bit 10 hex digits or 128-bit 26 hex digits. Higher encryption levels offer higher levels of security, but due to the complexity
of the encryption, they may decrease network performance.
4. Instead of manually entering WEP keys, you can enter a Passphrase in the Passphrase field. This Passphrase is used to generate one or more WEP keys. It is case-sensitive and should not be longer than 16 alphanumeric characters. (This Passphrase function is compatible with Linksys wireless
products only. If you want to communicate with non-Linksys wireless products, enter the WEP key manually on the non-Linksys wireless products.)
After you enter the Passphrase, click the Generate button to create WEP keys.

Note: All Wireless-G and 802.11b devices in your network must use the same Passphrase or WEP key.
5. WEP keys enable you to create an encryption scheme for wireless LAN transmissions. If you are not using a Passphrase, then manually enter a set of values in each Key field. (Do not leave a key field blank, and do not enter all zeroes. These are not valid key values.) If you are using 64-bit WEP encryption, then the key must be exactly 10 hexadecimal characters in length. If you are using 128-bit WEP encryption, then the key must be exactly 26 hexadecimal characters in length. Valid hexadecimal characters are “0”-“9” and “A”-“F”.
6. Check all the values, and click theApply button to save your WEP settings and return to the Setup screen. To cancel any changes you’ve entered on this page, click the Cancel button. To get more information about the features, click the Help button.
