Hi Richard
To answer your question of what you need to download and make the songs play:
This player is meant to play mp3 and Windows Media files To do so, you need the use of a Windows computer with USB port , connection cable (included) and a music management software (MusicMatch Jukebox."
Go to the following webpage and download a user manual for your player...it will give you all the information you need.

The easiest way to record what you're playing in your ypt-400 is through a computer. There is a feature in it called "USB Connectivity" which allows you to play your songs in your computer and same time allows you to download songs from the internet. Once connected, you can create a folder in your computer storing all the songs you played in your ypt-400 . Once it is stored, you can replay those songs in your computer via winamp or media player. To connect to the computer you need a USB cable that will allow you to plug it to the USB port of your YPT-400 and to the USB port of your computer. You can buy this cable from any store that supplies electronic gadgets and accessories. One more thing, you can even email those songs to your friends. Try it.
While it may be something you're well aware of, did you navigate to the folder on the Coby where the songs reside? Is it possible you loaded the mp3s in a directory that is not the default and so the player doesn't see any music. Another possibility is the copyright protection won't allow the player to play the songs. The license may reside on your computer but is not on the mp3 player. Last two thoughts (as stupid as they sound) are is volume up? Is earphones securely plugged in? Have you tried the earphones on another unit to make sure they work? sounds like you got a bug.while connected to the computer, go into my computer, to the e: drive if that's what it is, and try running a chkdsk. gl. one other thing, will your anti-virus allow you to scan E: if it does it may well clean any bugs that you might've picked up. hopefully you r not downloading from limewire. i hear because it's free it's subjected to many more bugs viruses, villans and the likes...lol good luck though.
The songs you have loaded have a restrictive license on them that only allows full playback on a computer, not on an mp3 player. If you only download songs in mp3 format, you will never have this problem.
You can thank Microsoft for creating Digital Rights Management.
Okay...I'm assuming this is an MP3 that you loaded using the Rhapsody-to-go or other music service that allows for subscription music.
What the MP3 player is telling you is that because you have subscription music and not purchased music, the DRM allows you to only play the song or songs 30-90 days after download. To continue to listen to the songs, you will need to open your Media Manager software (Best Buy Digital Music Service, Rhapsody, WMP11, Media Monkey, etc) connect your MP3 player to the PC, identify the MP3 player through the media manager and tell it to re-authorize your tracks. Once its finished you'll be able to play your songs for another 30-90 days. You will need to repeat this re-authorizing to continue to play the tracks.
