Question about Audio Players & Recorders
Check your tv's setup menu. Some tv's require you to turn on the optical audio output. It defaults to being turned off unless you go in and change it.

SOURCE: hdmi or optical
There are no noticable differences between HDMI and optical except price. Although optical is less prone to EFM interference, HDMI can carry a wider bandwidth, depending on quality, but cost a lot especially long runs (10 ft or more). Also optical cables are not prone to connector tarnish which occurs even with gold pins of HDMI

Solved problem with Yamaha HTR-6040 AV Receiver. My daughter had inadvertently changed the program to "Direct Stereo" mode which allows sources to bypass the decoders and DSP processors so you can listen to 2-Channel PCM and Analog sources. Nothing to decode digital audio in this setting!

If your TV has an HDMI input, hook up the PS3 w/an
HDMI cable to the TV. This will give you a high def picture (set up the
PS3 to output the max resolution your TV displays). That will take care
of the video side.
Next hook up an optical cable from the PS3 to the receiver. In the PS3 menu, you have to change the audio settings to output the sound via the optical cable.
Finally to get sound out of the receiver to the speakers, you have to setup the receiver source input. For example if you setup the PS3 to play thru "VCR" input, then you have to make sure the VCR input is setup to use either optical 1 or optical 2 for sound (whichever one you have the optical cable plugged in from the PS3).
