Question about Moen Home
We got a large leak that flooded the floor while the shower was in use. There was no change in the water pressure during the shower. The leak was large enough that the bathroom floor and the adjoining room's floor flooded. We are on well water and have had to replace all of the copper water pipes with PVC due to corrosion. My question is, do we have to cut the old valve out and replace it, or do you think just changing the Moen cartridge will fix it ?
Frankly that DOES NOT sound like a valve leak...
... but the alternative of taking the wall apart is pretty daunting.
The cartridge seems futile to me... but I easily done
done at small expense...
While you are at the PLUMBERS SUPPLY...
Pick up some of those SHARK-BITE couplers...
Easy on... easy off SOLDERLESS CONNECTIONS
(see video at bottom).
They make a job like your INCREDIBLY painless...
ALSO REMEMBER THERE are two sides to every wall...
Do pay attention... these work on COPPER, PVC AND PEX...!!
You don't always have to BREAK INTO the wall
from the FROM THE MOST expensive side...
Hope this helps...

The proper fix for this is to hone out the scratches
take steel wool and wrap it around a dowel or piece of wood or ust stuff it into the housing and turn back and forth to smoth out the scratch
if the scratch is real dep you wll have to go to harbor freight and get a honing tol that fits on the end of a drill
the stem should have some type of crown washer that you should be able to get an assortment from lowes , ace or hd
If you are asing for a recommendation for a good silicone I always use GE silicone it is the best
as a last resort (if nothing else works to stop leak
I would take cartridge wall and streatch teflon tape as tight and smooth as possible to block water coming up between housing and
cartrideg this is not recomended by mfg just a spa (my initials) certified suggestion

make sure when you turn on the hot and cold shut off valves all the way and turn the moen on after that. Some times I would get that problem if I turned one(either hot or cold) off then tried the shower.

SOURCE: Moen shower/tub faucet
hi... yes that's a very common issue with moen "cartridges" -- it's very simple to fix..... grasp the handle and give it a gentle tug upwards when the water is on... if it retracts again, pull the handle out again and tug again but this time a bit harder. Not sure what causes this on new cartridges but it will fix your issue.
