Is this a spring-wound timer?
You rotate the timer knob, and it begins ticking?

This type mechanical timer will work with any voltage.
What voltage line do you have?
240Volt has 2 hot wires. Connect 1 hot wire to timer. Timer turns off 1 hot wires, and that action will turn off 240V circuit.
120V has 1 hot wire. Connect this hot wire to timer, and it will turn off 120V circuit.

Be sure you have GFCI breaker or Arc fault breaker on spa circuit.

most timers run on a 24 hour cycle may need to reset the timer so the tub will run until the desired tem is reached OR drain some water out and refill with hot water from your in-house heater..help it catch up..

Hot tub timer turns on the heater but not the pump.

More likely the pump is failing, the pump disconnected or the timer is not connected to the pump. If you run the heater without running the pump then you are likely to do damage to your equipment. I would get it checked by a properly qualified and licensed service technician.

Can it be put on a timer so it won't come on so often

Yes.
If spa plugs into ordinary outlet, then choose heavy-duty outdoor timer. Use P1261 with GFCI or P1121 without GFCI.
If outlet already has GFCI, do not use two GFCIs

If spa is hard-wired, then install T101 for 120volt, or T104 for 240Volt

Wiring motor hot tub

The wiring diagram should show on side of motor.
Here is basic motor wiring:

Test each lead as shown in following image. In the case of 240Volt, the 2nd wire is not Neutral, but testing is same.

If you have 2 speed motor, then you will have switch or timer controlling the speed:

I have a 15 year old Hydropool Gold Series hot tub that I bought used a month ago. We got it all hooked up and working great but was told the timer never worked so it ran 24/7. Yesterday my husband turned...

If you can find the points on the timer try sanding them down. If they were burnt and stuck the spa would have run continuous. When you pulled the timer you may have broken them free but a burn would have kept them from making contact. I hope this helps, if not you might try reversing the leads coming into the timer or wherever you unhooked it to take it out. good luck.

Heeeelp! How to hook up hoses on Sundance spa

There is a skimmer in the side of your tub( the part that skimms water off the top ) and what is called a main drain or a better tearm is deep suction that pulls water from the bottom of the tub and helps collect heavy dirt from in the tub these two lines ( three if there is more than one main drain) These will all come together and then hook to the front of the pump. If your filter is under the skimmer basket the top of the pump will go to the heater and then back to the spa. If your filter in not under the skimmre basket then it will come after the pump then on to the heater. So in answer to your second question, the front of the pump draws the water in and the top pushes the water out. But make sure that your heater is last in line so it only deals with clean water and it will not run on the suction side of the pump as it need water pressure in it to start and contious flow to keep it from over heating. Hope this helps.

Want to hook it up to my hot tub

Yes, these pool heaters are designed for use with a spa. They are made to accommodate temperatures for both a pool and a spa running off of the same heater. Check the owners manual for specific instructions.
