It sounds that you might have pressed the 'CC' button, and closed caption function have been set ON. If so, to close it, press the "CC" button on the remote control once again.

Those banners and adverts are embedded on the websites that you access which you cannot prevent. You can only prevent pop ups.

Picture too large for screen

hi, this can be resolved by trimming the output in the formatting section of the menu screen. (display options). you wil want to choose the 16:9 format. this will keep everything inside the screen boundaries.

Blackout area on screen

Make sure the TEXT and CAPTION options are turned off.

I am not sure about the Sonny's, but on my Toshiba a black box appears when I inadvertently leave one of the close captioning (CC) on for text or captions on (such as CC1, CC2, etc.).

Black Rectangle appears on bottom half of screen

Go into your setup menu and turn off closed captioning. The box is there for some channels even though no text is being sent. If you need to keep the closed captioning, try selecting a different mode for it.

can see it in certain lighting and even when the TV is off! It will appear lighter than the surrounding areas at times and can be annoying. I called Toshiba and had a service man come out and even though he acknowledged that this is common, Toshiba will not replace the screen.

my thought is that it's something with the closed captioning, fiddle with those settings in the menu, or with the devices like VCR or DVD if you're using something like that as a tuner.
