Thank you!! I'm still not getting spark?

  • Bruce Apr 25, 2013

HI Jerry, I assume you have done the easy stuff. Replace coil wire and ensured coil is good. I can't remeber for sure but the 49 was a 6 volt ystem yes? Or it may have been upgraded at some time in it's life. Ensure coil cap and rotor are good by replacing with known good unit.

Thanks again Bruce for responding, its a 12 volt system

I have replaced the rotor button ,cap, points
I'm getting power through the resonator, how would you go about checking the coil?

  • Bruce Apr 26, 2013

Hi Jerry, I am unfamiliar with the term "resonator" except as refers to exhaust. I have looked online and there seems to be a device for ignition called resonator but I have no experience with it. As to checking the coil I would usually use rubber handle pliers and pull the coil wire out of the top of the distributor cap and have someone crank the engine. Hold the coil wire near the top of the cap where it plugs in and the spark should jump. You may even hear it depending on ambient noise. If you cannot detect any spark. You may want to try this method at night or nearly dark when the spark can be seen much easier especially if it is weak. A good spark should be bright and strong and make a good snapping sound. Below is more help for you possibly.

What is the ignition point gap in an oliver 1550 tractor?

Most point gaps fall into a range of .010" to .014". You should be able to get it running in that range. You can then readjust to different gaps for best performance.

Have a farmall super m need gap measurement on the points

The point gap should be 0.013 inches. You should also check the end play and run out on the shaft before point installation (vertical & horizontal movement)- should be minimal or the engine will run erratic or not at all if too loose.

When setting points on a CA Allis Chalmers Tractor. What should the gap be and do you do it on the lobe or flat service

Set the gap on the high spot on the lob,it should be set at around 50000 or twice the plug gap, this is just a rule of thumb, but changing the timing by turning the distributer will get the engine to max performance after this has been done.

Turns over not starting changed points

Verify the point gap is set right and that you are getting a good spark. Check to see if you are getting fuel to the carb.

ok, since you have the points, I assume you have the B43g Onan
engine. Was it running before the new parts were installed?
Check your point gap and make sure it is .016, plugs ahould be gapped at .025 Make sure your plug wires are good too. Should be somewhere between 0 and 10,000 ohms per foot, when measured with an ohmmeter. Once everything is rechecked for gap distance, make sure there is no spark by pulling plug out, leaving wire on and ground the outside of plug to the chassis of the tractor.
Crank over and look for the spark. Coils are about $100, so you want to eliminate everything else first.
Diagnosing a points ignition for no spark is really simple. Do you have 12V at the coil? Do you get a spark when you connect and disconnect the negative terminal of the coil to ground? If not you have a bad coil.
