turn the power head upside down. There should be a latch to open. the belt goes from the center of the floor brush to a piston on the motor. It helps if you have the old belt to get the correct size.

I have an Electrolux Genesis model upright. How do I get into it to change the belt?

Lay the vacuum on it's front so you can see the bottom of the powerhead as shown below. Befrore going further, hold your hand straight and move your hand across the opening for the brush. If the bristles don't make good contact, the brush also needs replaced.
Remove the four screws. Using a flathead screwdriver, place it into the two rectangle openings (shown with red arrows) near the wheels and gently pry on tab to release the top of the power head.
rogerpotts_2.jpg Flip machine over and gently lift cover off and set aside.

rogerpotts_4.jpg This is what you should see. Remove the two screws at the ends of the brush. Check carefully how the ends of the brush fit in. Gently lift out brush. This is a good time to clean entire interior of the power head. Install new belt over motor shaft and teeth of brush: set brush into place. Insert screws. Check tension of the belt.
Replace cover of power head, being sure to settle front in just beneath the lip of the front of the base first. Press down until it "clicks" into place. Turn machine over and insert and tighten screws.
Your vacuum is now ready to use.

How do I change belt in power head? Is there a

There could be 2 different ways to access the belt on the kenmore line of powerheads...

1) turn the powerhead over so that the bottom is facing up. IF there are screws on the bottom, remove them. There should be 2 either at the back where the rear wheels are, or one under the elbow, and one midway at the front under the lifter wheels. remove the screws, and there should be two tabs on the sides to remove the top cover. OR 2 tabs at the back of the unit near the screws to remove the top cover.

2) and this is the more common powerhead...

remove the light cover for the powerhead by pressing at the two sides and pulling the cover up. sometimes a screwdriver to pry open a little will help.
Remove the light bulb.
Remove the two screws.
Turn the head over and pry at both sides to pull the top cover off.

Good luck with either one.

See were to put the swr driver on both sides and not sure where to pull up

Hello,

I'm pretty sure you're asking about a Kenmore canister vacuum,

Here's what you'll need to replace a belt on a Kenmore2_bing.gif canister vacuum:

- Phillips Head Screw Driver
- Flat Head Screw Driver

There are two different types of belts2_bing.gif that are used on a Kenmore Canister. One of them is called a cogged belt, which has little teeth on the inside of the belt. The other is called a serpantine belt, which looks like a car belt, and has little grooves on the inside of the. You'll be able to tell which on yours takes after opening up the power nozzle.

This is the Cogged or Geared Belt with little teeth inside the belt:

This is the other Serpantine Belt that has little grooves on the inside of the belt:

Here's how you can replace the belt on your Kenmore Canister vacuum cleaner2_bing.gif. First, before taking apart the power nozzle to change the belt, try pressing the overload protection system reset switch. This overload protection feature is designed to shut off the power nozzle if something gets stuck in the brushes, to prevent the belt from breaking.

Step 1. If you're power nozzle is a square shaped nozzle like the nozzle that I took a picture of above, then you'll need to first remove the headlight cover before you can access the roller brush and belt. Simply squeeze both sides of the headlight housing, and while squeezing, lift upwards with your fingers exactly where my fingers are located in this picture:

Step 2. After the headlight cover has been removed, you'll see two screws underneath of the headlight cover, directly in front of the neck of the power nozzle. You'll need to remove both of these screws. I have circled these screws in red:

Step 3. After both of these screws have been removed, turn the power head upside down, so the roller brush is facing upwards. You should see writing that points to an area to put your flat head screw driver. You'll need to put the flat head screw driver down inside of the nozzle, and pry the top blue housing from the black bottom housing. Here's where the screw driver should go on the left side0723429.jpg:

Here's a picture of the screwdriver prying off the right side:

Step 4. Now turn the power nozzle back over on top, and remove the top housing of the nozzle. You may have to push the handle release pedal in order to take the top housing off.

How do you open up the power head to check the belt?

Turn the power head over so the bottom is facing up. On the bottom towards the back there are two holes (one on each side) where you can get to the access screws. Remove the two screws (you'll need a phillips screwdriver). With the screws removed you can now remove the top cover from the base by pulling out on the two clips on each side of the power head. With the top cover removed you can get to the belt and roller brush. If you need a belt for this model you can get it here:

We have a Beam1500 central vac. It sucks stuff off the floor, but then just clogs in the head of the unit.

The head itself is likely the power head..,which is sweeping but the neck is probably clogged. Detach your wand and look thru. Drop a coin thru your hose handle and shake thru the other end. If these are clear the issue is the head.
Then check the neck of the head itself. It may be necessary to open as though changing the belt, generally by several screws in the base of the head.

I have a Broan Nutone central vacuum. The power head seems to stall unless you lift up on the handle. I think I may need to change the belt but cannot find a place to purchase one to see if this is the...

If the power head is spinning when you lift up the handle then the head could be blocked with dirt. You may need to undo the floor head to see if the entire brush roll is clear as well as the main dirt channel/turbine wheel. Ensure that everything is clear before assuming it may be the belt that needs to be replaced.
You may well have to call or contact the main company who makes Broan Nutone models for them to send out / query the power head problem.
