The service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).

Is this a windows product key? It should be afixed on the bottom of the laptop. If someone sold you a laptop with no COA (certificate of authenticity) then that individual broke the law. Windows XP has to be activated in order to use. After the 30 trial period, it will lock you out until it is activated. If it is telling you you have the wrong product key, you can call to activate. But, if you don't have a product key, you will need to either buy one or install a distro of linux.

The shop probably used a version of XP with a volume license key so they didn't have to go through the activation process. (They really shouldn't be working this way, but that's just my opinion.) There may be some problem with driver compatibility or you may have picked up a virus or worm.
Probably the easiest thing for you to do (relatively easy, anyway) is to reinstall XP again using your copy. If you haven't installed too many new applications since getting your computer back you won't lose anything but time. You can back your personal data up before starting.
Make sure you download the drivers you'll need for audio, network, etc. If this is a used name-brand computer you can find the drivers at the manufacturer's website. If this is a home-built machine, look inside to get the manufacturer and model information for the system board and any plug-in cards and get the drivers from the respective manufacturers' sites.
If the the computer's been running okay until now, you might try a tool called combofix. You can find instructions and download links here. Combofix is a great tool that hunts down eliminates several viruses and worms and might help out. But reinstalling XP from a fresh start and putting on current antivirus and antispyware software is a sure thing.
If I can be of more help just post a followup.
