The front wire grating has hooks all around the edge that latch onto the rear grating. You need at least two screwdrivers, blades or thin & stiff shims to pry half the hooks off. Do this by inserting your shims between the front and rear grates, on either side of a hook. Then, lever your shims such that the rear grate warps enough to free a hook and let it pass in front. (Note: this IS difficult; the first hook will not want to clear the rear grate. It helps to have an extra pair of hands, and/or another object to temporarily keep the first hook seperated. It may also be possible to start with three shims and clear two hooks in the beginning). Continue clearing the hooks in a consecutive fashion (they're progressively easier) until half of them are off, at which point the front grate should come off using a little muscle. A couple notes: if available, a plastic shim is preferable over a metal one because it shouldn't damage the nice finish as much (alternatively, wrap your shims in cloth). It is NOT necessary to remove the whole fan cage from the stand to do this. Expect the reverse process to be equivalently challenging. Please wear safety glasses in case your shim breaks or slips. Lastly, good luck if you try to lubricate the shaft. I've tried multiple substances, but day-long blowing continually dries out the lubricant.

How do I clean out a lasko high velocity blower fan?

SOURCE: When I turn my fan on, the motor starts but I must

Lubricate/spin the shaft (by hand) on both ends -- it may be gunked up.

If that doesn't solve the problem, it's the start capacitor inside the motor housing. Probably needs replacing.

More info, let me know.

SOURCE: cleaning of the fans

When I called Seville Support I was told that you can NOT open fan to clean and may not get it together if attempted (glad I stopped when I did!).
You need to use air pressure. After using much of a can of compressed air such as you would use on a keyboard and not getting too far, I broke out my seldom used air compressor which kicked out enough dust bunnies as to block out the sun. Hint: be sure to use outdoors. I'm happy to report both units working as good as new.

Don't have an air compressor? Ask your neighbor, he'll need the correct nozzle to 'blow air' (it comes in handy for many tasks).

Clean fan

Flip open the latches around the cage to open that part up. Once open, turn the knob in the middle of the blade to the right. Normally iyou turn it left, but on this ne you turn right. That enables yo to remove the blade. Behind the blade is a rather large plastic nut, which you turn to remove and that takes the back part of the screen off. Use your vacuum to vacuum out the dust from the motor, the cages, and the fan blade. After that use a mild soap and water solution to wipe off the rest. I found it very helpful if you use a thick wet hand towel to clean the wire cage. It cleans it very well! Then just put it all back together again and your fan will look brand new.

A short circuit in the power wiring would probably cause the fuse or breaker controlling the circuit to open. Make sure the AC outlet you're plugged in to is actually working. If so, there's an open circuit somewhere if no power is reaching the motor.

Have you checked the switch with an ohmmeter to make sure it's really working? Check the wiring from the switch to the motor. You can also make sure the motor windings aren't open with the ohmmeter. The motor may have burned out as they sometimes do.

Check for voltage right at the motor. If this is a brush-type motor, the brushes may be worn out. It may also be that the motor is getting voltage but has a bad starting capacitor. Most commercial equipment uses capacitor-start motors, and the capacitor is usually mounted in a bracket on the motor. You can test the cap with a meter that has capacitor checking; replace the cap if it measures outside of the tolerance marked.

Fan stops after 2 minutes of running

Hi,If your deskfan has a timer, the problem would be the timer switch that must be replace, because it is the one the supplies power to you fan.if it has no timer, the problem would be the bushing and the lubricant. Open up the fan cage cover and try to move the fan blade, if the fan blade does not move freely that means it has either the bushing needs replacement or oil lubricant is needed in the bushing.Drop some oil in the middle of the shaft of the fan to help it run again.
Did you hear if the fan make some noise when you last use it?
Hope that helps you out.
Thanks for using FixYa!

Have a Duracraft DT-70. It is dirty and filled with cat hairs and grease on the blades. I can't figure out how to get it apart to clean it.

You will need to take this apart and use a good degeasing spray to remove off al the dirt. Use diesel/kerosene to wash well and clean it dry. Use a good paintt brush to wash off all dirt into the hidden areas.
Wipe dry finally to reset.

HOW DO YOU CLEAN THE FAN BLADES?

there should be just some sort of snaps, or hooks holding the guard on. I have yet to see a fan that doesn't. but if there is any, take the clips off of the guard, and clean the blades.
