Question about RCA L42FHD37 42 in. LCD HDTV

1 Answer

"Unusable Signal" Hello all. Purchased an RCA L42FHD37 LCD in November. Worked great, but now having intermitent "Unusable Signal" come up. It plays audio/video fine, then I lose both, then comes on again, and this repeats every few seconds or so. Only happens with my DVD player, which I have hooked up to HDMI port #3 on the TV, which is on the side of the TV. I have an OPPO upconverting DVD hooked up to it. Funny thing is, it worked fine up 'till now. Never had problems before, and didn't change anything. Tried a new HDMI cable, but still has the problem. Switched to another HDMI port on the TV (in the back), and it works fine. RCA had me lug TV to local RCA shop, who tells me I need a new PC board, which they are still waiting on. Does this make any sense? Any help would be great. atiq1969

But is there even such a thing as a PCB board for a tv, and if so, what is it?

    It does make sense.

Newer TV are no different than a computer, more like a laptop.

Look at the web site for TV parts, Shopjimmy.com

You browse around and see all the parts in side TV, and it's no different that a computer.

The only problem I believe is the screens are generating too much heat inside the TV causing the life reduction of PC boards inside.

Just think about it, a big screen that a lot of watts, a thin computer behind it with no cooling fan.

Ok. PCB means Printed Circuit Board.
It looks similar to the picture down below. A part must have gone bad on your PC board. So, the RCA shop ordered a replacement PC board to fix the problem. It's an interchangeable part. All newer TV now have PC boards, which each one hold a different function.

The back lights inverter is working because you can see the "Unusable Signal' on the screen, if the inverter is dead, yoo will see nothing on the screen at all.
If the T-CON (LCD controller) is dead, you will see just gray glowing screen with no pictures or text.
You may have problem with video processor in the main logic board (tuner, audio, source selector).
Parts for your TV:

This is going to be difficult repair since you do have a way to try out the replacement board to be sure that is the problem. RCA service person has that advantage of parts in stock to try out.
I estimate the board from Jimmy to be about $150, from RCA will be twice as much, plus labor.

Hello Mike:

The issue that you are having is with your small signal board and it needs to be replaced, it sounds like the microprocessor on that board is getting locked up.
