You download the proper Audio driver, AND install it.......

Driver: Small piece of software that allows the Operating System to communicate with a device

The device is the Audio chipset. What version of Windows operating system hasn't been stated yet.

[ Chip and Chipset are slang terms for I.C.
Integrated Circuit,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Integrated_Circuit

Moving on.......

http://support.asus.com/download.aspx?SLanguage=en&m=R503U&os=

Reviews suggest the Asus R503U series comes with Windows 64-bit. Therefore it is Win 8 64-bit I will use as an example;

(Where it states -> OS: Select OS.....click on the blue Down Arrow on the right, and then click on the Operating System you are using......I clicked on Windows 8 64-bit)

Scroll down, click on the + sign to the left of Audio (3)
You will see there are 3 Audio driver files listed.
One is for a Realtek audio chipset, Two are for a VIA audio chipset.
How to know what audio chipset you have? Go to Device Manager.

http://pcsupport.about.com/od/windows-8/a/device-manager-windows-8.htm

When in Device Manager click on the + sign next to -> Sounds, video and game controllers
In the Side Menu that comes out, do you see VIA listed, or Realtek?

I'm going to choose VIA for the example......
That would be to download the Top file -
Version V6.0.10.1200

[ What is indicated is to NOT use this upgrade Driver, -> IF you are upgrading your Operating System from Windows 7, to Windows 8.
Since reviews indicate the operating system -> IS Win 8, then it's OK to use this driver.

HOWEVER, if you are upgrading from Win 7 to Win 8 -> STOP, and let me know in a Comment ]

Under the bold -> Version V6.0.10.1200 -> go to Download from.
,right underneath it.
Click on the blue - Global

A small window will come up -
Opening Audio_Via_Win7_8_VER60101200.zip

Make SURE there is a Green dot in the small circle, to the Left of Save File.
IF not; left-click in the small circle to the left of Save File.
Now go below in the small window, and click on OK.

A small download window will come up.
Allow the file to download ALL the way, then DOUBLE-click right on the file name.

In the next window go all the way to the Left, and click on -
Extract all files.

At the bottom of the next 3 small windows, click on Next, Next, and Finish.
(Do Not click on anything else. Click on Next, Next, and Finish)

If you are not asked to restart your computer, do so.
Close all windows, go back to your desktop screen; and restart your computer.

You should have your sound back........
If you do not have the Volume icon, let me know in a Comment.
(We will make our way through it together. I haven't used Win 8 yet, nor have it on any computer yet. Still, it's Windows, and it can be figured out.........Isn't like we're talking about Linux......lol!)

None of the above makes sense to you? No prob
Tell me what Windows operating system it is.
Looks like it's either going to be;
Windows 7 32-bit,
OR;
Windows 7 64-bit,
OR
Windows 8 64-bit
Should state on the laptop's Palm Rest Cover. If not look at the Windows sticker, on the bottom of the laptop. (DO NOT post the product key, in the Windows sticker. XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX)

Then go into Device Manager, and tell me what audio chipset is used. You don't even need to see - audio chipset. Just tell me if you see - VIA, or Realtek.

Post back in a Comment. Then I will guide you step by step.

Regards,
joecoolvette

Asus R503u explorer.exe Desktop shows

It sounds like you may have installed some malware or corrupted part of your windows installation.
Reboot your computer, and repeatedly press f8 until a menu shows options like "safe mode ' safe mode with networking ' repair your installation" etc. You'll want to highlight the Repair your installation option and hit enter. Then follow the prompts untill you reach a page with the option "System Restore" and Use the latest backup available.

Do i have bluetooth with my ASUS R503U RH21

Specifications from http://www.cnet.com/laptops/asus-r503u-rh21-15/4507-3121_7-35536437.html would seem to say NO, but your model may be slightly different. You should have high-speed wifi however.
