Get into the bios/setup of the server (hit either of f2 or f10 or del keys during start up) and somewhere you should have an option to set the ATA/SATA hd to legacy mode, that should do it.

The BIOS does not detect or recognize the ATA / SATA hard drive Tips and tricks for troubleshooting a Serial ATA or ATA/IDE internal drive that is not detected in the BIOS.
There are six main reasons why a system BIOS will not detect the presence of an internal hard drive. Here is a list of them. They are not in any particular order, but you can follow these steps one by one to troubleshoot this problem:
  1. Drive not enabled in the BIOS
  2. Serial ATA drivers are not properly installed
  3. Faulty or unplugged data cable
  4. Drive is not spinning up
  5. Incorrect jumper settings on the drive
  6. Faulty hard drive
Note: Sections 3, 4, 5, and 6 pertain to PC or Mac systems. Sections 1 and 2 pertain only to PC systems.
For more detailed step-by-step troubleshooting on this topic, please see the Seagate Serial ATA troubleshooter "Drive Not Detected" section.
After verifying that your ATA or SATA port is set to Auto-Detect or is enabled, if you find that your disk drive is not being detected (auto-detected) by the system BIOS, try the following steps to try and isolate/troubleshoot the problem.

    System setup is where the date and time are stored and where startup preferences like NumLock or Passwords are defined. In addition, many hardware settings are defined in System Setup.
    In particular, hard disk drives are often controlled here. At the simplest level, hard drives are numbered in Setup as Drive 0, Drive 1, etc or sometimes as Primary Master, Primary Slave. Which ever way these are named, they have a basic ON / OFF setting (sometimes AUTOMATIC or something similar). If your drive is not detected it may be because it is turned OFF in System Setup.
    In most cases, the boot drive is Drive 0 or Primary Master. When you add a second drive to the system, it may be need to be enabled by turning it ON in System Setup.

  3. To be able to hit the F6 button, you must restart the Setup process, and watch the bottom of the screen after pressing Enter on the "Welcome to Setup" screen. There will be some moments of files being loaded, and then you should see a message appear that says "Press F6 if you need to install a 3rd party SCSI or RAID driver". This message will only stay on the screen for a couple of seconds, so press F6 as soon as you see it appear.

  4. After this is done, you will see other messages appear, and it will act as though nothing is happening, but eventually a screen will appear that will allow you to install the drivers for the add-in SATA controller. The screen will look like the sample below:

  5. After you press S, the driver install process will continue and the floppy diskettes will be needed. Further instructions will be furnished after the driver install process has ended.

  6. Insert the floppy diskette containing the drivers for the add-in Serial ATA controller.
  7. Once the drivers are loaded, proceed with the normal Windows XP/2000 installation.

A few further notes on the driver diskette:
For the hard drive to be detected in a new installation, the drivers for the add-in SATA controller/motherboard must be loaded at the beginning of installation.
The drivers for the controller/motherboard can probably be found either on the CD that came with it or on the manufacturer's website. These drivers do not come from Seagate; they come from the motherboard manufacturer. Simply load the required drivers on the diskette and have it ready.

  • The BIOS will not detect a hard disk if the data cable is damaged or the connection is incorrect.
    Serial ATA cables, in particular, can sometimes fall out of their connection. Be sure to check your SATA cables are tightly connected to the SATA port connection.
  • The easiest way to test a cable is to replace it with another cable. If the problem persists, then the cable was not the cause of the problem.
  • For ATA drives, Seagate recommends using UDMA cabling with a maximum length of 18 inches. UDMA cables have color coded connections which require proper orientation when connecting.
    • Blue connector - always connects to the motherboard.
    • Grey (middle) connector - is used for slave devices on the cable.
    • Black connector - is used for master device connection.

  • If the drive is still not spinning, connect it in another computer if possible.
  • Connect the drive in a SATA-USB enclosure or something similar if possible.

    if its a sata hard drive there are no jumper settings the larger driver should take the job as primary


    if you have an ide hard drive

    you can find the jumper location next to the power on a hard drive and the settings for plastic jumper location is usually printed on the top of a hard drive

    IDE-0 means Pri master
    IDE-1 means Pri slave
    IDE-2 means Sec master
    IDE-3 means Sec slave

    What You Need

    • A Phillips screwdriver and four 6-32 UNC drive mounting screws.
    • A Serial ATA interface cable (sold separately). Maximum length is 39 inches (1 meter).
    • A Serial ATA-compatible power cable or adapter (sold separately).
    • A version of Windows with FAT32 or NTFS file system.
    • A system with a motherboard that has a Serial ATA connector on it, or a Serial ATA host adapter and available PCI slot in which to install the adapter.

    Refer to your computer system documentation to see if your system supports Serial ATA on the motherboard and to locate the Serial ATA connector.


    If your system does not have a Serial ATA connector on the motherboard, you must purchase a Serial ATA host adapter that is compatible with your computer and operating system and install it with the appropriate device driver according to the host adapter manufacturers installation instructions.

    Handling Precautions

    • Disk drives are fragile. Do not drop or jar the drive. Handle the drive only by the edges or frame. Keep the drive in the protective anti-static container until you are ready to install it to minimize handling damage.
    • Drive electronics are extremely sensitive to static electricity. While installing the drive, wear a wrist strap and cable connected to ground.
    • Turn off the power to the host system during installation.
    • Do not disassemble the drive. Doing so voids the warranty.
    • Do not apply pressure or attach labels to the circuit board or to the top of the drive.
    Attaching Cables and Mounting the Drive

    1. Attach one end of the drive interface cable to the Serial ATA interface connector on your computers motherboard or Serial ATA host adapter (see your computer manual for connector locations). Host adapter configuration is shown below.
    Note: Serial ATA connectors are keyed to ensure correct orientation.


    2. Attach the interface and power cables to the drive.

    3. Secure the drive using four 6-32 UNC mounting screws in either the side-mounting or bottom-mounting holes. Insert the screws no more than 0.20 inches (5.08 mm) into the bottom-mounting holes and no more than 0.14 inches (3.55 mm) into the side-mounting holes.
    Note: Do not overtighten the screws or use metric screws. This may damage
    the drive.

    Configuring the BIOS

    Close your computer case and restart your computer. Your computer may automatically detect your new drive. If your computer does not automatically detect your new drive, follow the steps below.

    1. Restart your computer. While the computer restarts, run the system setup program (sometimes called BIOS or CMOS setup). This is usually done by pressing a special key, such as DELETE, ESC, or F1 or F2 during the startup process.

    2. Within the system setup program, instruct the system to auto detect your new drive.

    3. Save the settings and exit the setup program. When your computer restarts, it should recognize your new drive. If your system still doesnt recognize your new drive, see the troubleshooting section on the back of this sheet.
    Note: Serial ATA is a new interface type.

    Some older systems may see the drive and classify it as a SCSI device if you are using a Serial ATA host adapter. This is normal even though this is not a SCSI disc drive. Many systems BIOS will not identify a Serial ATA drive connected to a PCI SATA host adapter.

    This is because a PCI SATA Host Adapter has its own BIOS which is used to identify hard drives connected to it which is separate from the BIOS of the computer.

    To determine whether or not the SATA Host Adapter is detecting the Serial ATA hard drive, please consult the documentation provided by the Serial ATA Host Adapters manufacturer. This does not affect drive performance or capacity.

Serial ATA:  If you have a 3.0 Gbit/sec SATA drive that is not being detected by your 1.5Gb/sec SATA controller, or it causes your system to lock up when connected to a 1.5 Gbit/sec SATA controller, you may need to jumper your 3.0 Gbit/sec SATA drive to the slower speed of 1.5 Gbit/sec for the system to recognize it properly.     Reasons a sata device might not be recognized in BIOS:
    (1)Serial ATA disabled, enter bios and enable SATA.

    (6)Serial ATA power adapter defective.

    I have a Galaxy Metal Gear Box. It will house two hard drives. It refuses to post the second drive. I just put a brand new one in it. Same result. Rocky


    If both drives are SATA (not "parallel-ATA") drives, then "swap" the physical location of the two drives, to see if only the "top" (or the "bottom") drive is NEVER detected. Or, if the "detected" drive moves after the drives are swapped, then the non-detected drive has a problem. In that case, remove the "good" drive, to see if the "bad" drive can be detected when it is the only active drive.

    If the computer cannot Bootup with an error message that hard drive nor detected or no boot device then you could have a faulty hard disk.
    Go into the BIOS configuration and see if the BIOS detects the hard disk. If it is not detected then it is probably faulty.
    Next reset the ATA data cable on the hard drive and at the motherboard. Bootup the computer again, also check the BIOS configuration again to see if it detects the hard drive.
    If it still does not find the hard drive then remove the hard drive and connect it to an USB hard drive adapter and plug it into a working computer's USB port. If this computer does not detect it as an external hard drive then this proves the hard drive is faulty.
    To get your computer working again, replace the hard drive and install Windows together with the device drivers and your programs.

    Windows xp setup does not detect hard drive


    You need to use the RAID/ATA floppy disk that was provided with your motherboard. It was supplied either on the cd or on seperate floppies.
    When you have the disk in the floppy drive you press F6 when it asks at the very beginning of loading files in the windows setup.
    When the setup asks load the RAID/ATA drivers and when you go to install your hard disk will be detected. You will have to get a floppy drive and plug it up if you don't already have one. There is a way to build a windows setup cd which includes the ata/raid drivers but it's often easier to just get a floppy drive.

    HDD unable to detect at My Computer


    Well first I would pull the hard drive out of the case. I would then get a USB to IDE/SATA drive cable. I would connect the drive not being able to be detected to another computer via USB.

    If it works the drive is still good but the data might be corrupt. If the data is corrupt I would be sure to get any stuff you can off of it and basically reformat and reload.
