Question about Dell Dimension 8400 PC Desktop

Dell Dimension 8400 will not boot period

My computer was working fine last night.  I shut it down when I went to bed, but when I came back this morning to turn it back on, it beeped several times very loudly and then the fan came on and sounded like a jet engine, louder than I have ever heard it.  There doesn't seem to be any signal being sent to the monitor.  It just continues to search for a signal.
I opened up the case a little bit ago and unplugged the drives (in hopes to not hurt them in any of the repair processes).  When I turned on the computer after that it still beeped at me but the fans didn't go crazy.  Plus, there still was no display on the monitor.  So I haven't really made any progress.
Any ideas on what could be wrong?  Motherboard and Processor were two ideas that came to my mind.  The computer is about 5 years old and I dont really want to sink any more money into it, but it would be nice to get it working again to get my files off if nothing else...

I also looked into the beep codes ( I Just found out about them)  The sequence is 1-3-2 I think.  It seems to be related to the RAM not being read or used correctly???

If you have any idea of opening the computer and try to tighten all the cards once and than try to reboot it. The beeps mean that there is some hardware thing which is loosen. So try to tighten all the cards ram all the wires as much as possible.

SOURCE: Dimension 8400 locks up. Keyboard won't respond.

Generally and indication of a software issue that is locking the system. There can be hardware causes too.

  1. Run diags on the system (From Resource CD or F12 menu) see if any failure. If you have a hardware failure then address it and see if the problem is solved.
  2. Update bios and drivers from support.dell.com
  3. Edit MSCONFIG, startup group, remove entries that are not required (Generally only AV and printer scanner items are needed here, most other items will function without and item here)
  4. Edit the Virtual Memory settings, and set it to Custom and an amount double the RAM (EG: 4 GB RAM set initial and Mas to 8200 MB VRAM)

It sounds like your bios were improperly flashed or went bad. The X300 SE message is your video card. So your video card works, the system mostly works, but the BIOS isn't starting up. You should contact Dell and tell them the situation.

Dell Dimension 8400, no post. B and D amber.

GYGY diagnostic lights -- Memory is detected, but a memory configuration or compatibility error exists, and the 1-3-2 beep sound indicates the MEMORY test failed, which means one of the four memory has gone bad or the one of the four slots on the motherboard has gone bad, Neither the memory nor the mother board has completely gone bad, but either one slot or one memory has gone bad, try placing one memory on all slots and check which slot is the issue, then trying placing any 3 memory on the remainig slot to isolate the memory, then after that use the best 3 in the best 3 slots and check, you computer should work fine, this would help you for sure

Do you have any USB devices connected to your computer. Disconnect your USB devices and restart your computer. Keep tapping the F1 key to go to the BIOS. Fress F5 and then F10 and wait till the computer boots to the desktop. And check if it would still shut down. If yes, then probably the issue is with the motherboard.
