Question about Behringer Europower Pmp5000 Powered Mixer Pmp5000

Open Question

PMP 5000 shuts down

I powered the mixer and let it stand for a while to prepare for rehersal and after close to 15 minutes it simply went dead. it was just powered on with everything off and no speaker conected. I switched off and back on again and it lasted a couple more minutes. Pluged in the speakers and the same happens. if it "coools down" (it's not hot just powered on) the same happens

SOURCE: i have a beringer 5000 mixer and can not get no

Oh, oh... got one on the bench now... There is a design defect that causes a short and destruction in the power amp portion.

Do a test: Plug headphones into the main 1/4 inch jacks. The sound won;t be very loud since these are line outputs, not for headphones.

IF you get sound out those, then one or both power amps are dead.

Worst case: if one amp is dead, several parts including three power MOSFET transistors are fried for any of the dead channels.
The failure of the amp can wipe out the main power supply. If you effect windows light up, then the small power supply is operating.
If the big supply is fried, there are two large MOSFET switching transistors that are gone. Often several smaller transistors and dides and resistors and one switching IC goes. MOST of these are surface mounted parts and would be beyond the scope of what you can repair.

I am trying to contact Behringer about the flaw but haven't heard back yet.

The nature of the flaw is this: The is insufficient clearance on an internal circuit layer from the edge that fits into a slot in the power amp heatsink. Any humidity that enters can cause the insulation to breakdown and arc to the heatsink causing a chain reaction.
I repaired one of these already before finding the cause, but this one had a smoking gun! I just yesterday milled out the slot deeper and wider and will put insulating tape to prevent further arcing. The arcing that had occured burned away the internal layer and the connections. I will replace thoose with hardwire.

Repair of this problem is time consuming to weed out all the blown parts and to safely bring the unit back to life.

The current unit I am working on took out ONLY the power amp. A 30 milliohm resistor went up in smoke making a real mess. All three power MOSFETS are gonzo and a zener as well... don't know what else I will find. The previous unit was worse as the power supply was wiped as well.

SOURCE: How do i hook up my new behringer pmp 5000 mixer

Passive loudspeakers are connected to the two "Speakon" connectors on the back of the unit. BUY GOOD cables for your speakers!!!! Whatever you do don't have a speaker line come loose while driving audio out !!! You will arc- out the rear-most power amp... I know, I repaired two of these now with the problem.

Connect the recording device to either the "tape OUT" RCA jacks or either of the pairs of MAIN out TRS jacks.

Set the slide switch for the MAIN L/MAIN R (upper position) leave this in this position unless you understand what the other positions are for to avoid damage. You will NOT need the other positions.

Further: Power ALL interconnect devices from the SAME receptacle source to avoid ground loops and possible damage.

YOUR passive speakers should be rated at least 300 Watts RMS continuos power handling or 600 Watts peaks.

Drive consumer stereo speakers with this and you will smoke the speakers and MAYBE blow the amp. This is a powerful amplifier and if you don't have at least 15 inch speakers you MUST really hold down the volume lest you blow the speakers.

Above all read the manual... yes, it is a bit hard to understand...

If you have a problem you can contact me by email for a bit of help. I have wo of these I have been using at venues now.

SOURCE: I am thinking of buying

No! I have two of the PMP5000 and one PMP3000.

I could tell you what parts are blown. If nothing lights up what has happened is the power amp (Usually the rearmost amp) has arced and destroyed the three switching transistors and a Zener diode and sometimes a metering resistor and two surface mounted transistors. So far parts cost is about $20 and a LOT of labor.

Since the fuse blew, it is possible as is often the case, that the power supply is also damaged. Now the total parts cost is $50 as two expensive IGBT's are blown, a regulator IC and four driver transistors for the IGBT's and one other surface mounted transistor and usually a diode. If a fuse has been repalced, then often a pair of power resistors associated with softstart are blown. A lot of labor is necessary on the power supply to remove the heatsinks that the IGBT's are on to replace them.

If the amp module (HCA2400) were the only thing, you can get those online complete for $175. Repair of those requires a lot of skill carving out burned board between layers of the multilayer board and restoring connections with jumpers.

You are probably looking at $300 parts and labor to restore this unit. I fix them for my own use, not others.

There is a weakness in insulation between internal and external layer of the circuit board near the rearmost amp and if you play it real load and had a speaker lead come loose the unit can arc and it is all over. There is also a polarity hazard. PLEASE read my tip on here in that regard about this. This applies to the PMP3000, PMP5000, PMP1280 amps.

SOURCE: i just both the Europower pmp6000 powerd mixer and

use 1/4 inch speaker cables. hook one speaker up to "main 1 R" out and the other to "main 1 L" out. if you have additional main speakers, hook them up the the "main 2" outputs.

look for the "bridge amp mode" switch and move it to the "main L- main R" position.

I have a pmp 5000 and i run crown power amps...i lost effects on my monitors and my mains seem to have distorsion...

Assuming you have not got the fx1/2 to mon turned right down it would seem likely that this has failed which would be about the only thing that would stop fx to mon if all else is working. You do not describe the distortion to the mains but if it is related to the fx then this would point to the same thing, a failed pot probably. These are a total nightmare to replace although the part is dirt cheap. Allow your self several hours if you think it is worthwhile. Behringer (and some other) mixers are now made in such a way as to be almost unrepairable using a single smt board that requires total disassembly of the unit to replace even wearing parts (excluded by the warranty). I would suggest replacing the mixer with a new one or a decent second hand one.

We are trying to purchase a pmp mixer for our church choir. What's the difference between the pmp 3000 and the pmp 4000? Thanks!

The answer is "Not Much"... they upped the rating for power out and added 1000 to the model number... I don't know of any circuitry difference between them... it would probably be minor. Functionality is the same.

One side of my europower pmp 5000 is out, the other is fine.....what up?

What is up is one of the two power amps is blown... I know this problem... It is USUALLY the rearmost channel which goes to the left Speakon faacing the back. Weak insulation between layers of the multilayer circuit board arcs and fries three transistors and a diode and sometimes a few more components. It takes a lot of skill to restore the module and is beyond most repair shops. A whole new module costs about $155 from Full Compass. The amp is an HCA2400 module, but you MAY need the Behringer part number to order it from Full Compass. Also please read my tip on Fixya for PMP mixers regarding the hazard when using 1/4 inch plugs from the Speakon connectors... the Channel A sleeve is the "hot", not the tip and if you ground the sleeve, goodbye channel A...

My europower pmp 2000 powered mixer wont turn on and the fuse appears good. I turned it on and it immediately turned off ,nothing smells burnt. any ideas on what it could be

This is likely a power supply failure, possibly brought on by a failure of one of the amp channels.

This is probably close to your supply:

There are two resistors 310-3 10R on the power supply of the Europower pmp 5000, i need to know if it is 330k or 330om.

The schematic for the power supply does NOT show resistors in the 310-3... Where are these in the circuit... IF THESE happen to be the gate drive resistors for the IGBT's they are 33 ohms. If you have hasd a failure in this area there are other parts that typically get destroyed, including one or both the speedup diodes at the same gates; Here is the complete PMP5000 schematic:

I accidentally used the two outs (A & B) at turning on the pmp 5000 in the bridge mode. The mixer was normal during the first 10 minutes, then the mixer shut down and stop working, and now it doesn't...

Insufficient information ! Were you using a special cable used for bridged mode or used regular cables and just changed the slide switch to bridged mode? IF you had regular cables for A/B and just had the switch to the bridged mode NO DAMAGE WOULD RESULT. The bridged mode switch really only sets both amps to be driven from the same mixing buss as monaural. If you had a bridged cable and a plain one you would have overloaded one side amp. The amps have an "electronic" over current fuse and if you trip it you have to leave the power off for a minute or so and then re-power the amp. There is a HAZARD that I have written a tip in Fixya about PMP mixers. The sleeve of a 1/4 inch plug connected to side A is the HOT signal out of the amp as opposed to the B channel being the tip of the 1/4 inch plug...this assumes you might be using Speakon to 1/4 inch speaker cables. DO NOT under any circumstances use Speakon to 1/4 inch adapter cables as the barrel of the adapter female part on channel A is HOT to ground and you will pop the A amp.!!!! I am afraid that if you were using regular cables taht another failure occurred not related to the setting to bridged mode. The speaker leads for bridged mode are configured by the way the special bridged mode Speakon cable is wired... The slide switch only configures where the amps get there audio be it stereo busses or singly from one side. If after being off for a few minutes the amp still is totally dead, check the main power fuse which is alongside the power input connection in a plastic boat you pull out. IF THE FUSE IS BLOWN do NOT replace it as it will likely cause additional damage. Have unit repaired. There is a weak spot in these that results in arcing between layers of a multi-layer circuit board.

Yes, the fan is temperature controlled. You have to drive it a bit before it runs, and then it is kind of throttled versus temperature.
