Vicshine,

If you pull the card and look at the pictures on a computer and they are still black, then it sounds like you could have a problem with the shutter or the mirror....

Best of luck!

Thanks.

I have a Canon Rebel XS with a 70-300 zoom lens. I am wanting to take pictures of soccer at night with lights. What are the best settings?

Your camera is equipped with a sports setting on the command dial see diagram
Diagram here
tri3mast_199.jpg
This setting will freeze fast moving subjects and if you keep your finger on the shutter it will shoot continuously. Knot knowing how bright the playing field is I'm going to suggest going with a good ISO 800 film. My preference is Fujifilm but I don't know where in the world you are and you may have access to an 800 speed film on another brand. You have a great lens for doing this so camera lens film and the sport setting should be all you need with the Rebel XS. Now one thing if the built in flash decides to pop up just close it down. What I use to do if the flash became annoying was I set a little black bag over it and carried a couple sets of batteries. I liked using this mode because it let me concentrate on the players, game and composition rather then fiddling with the camera controls, let it do it's thing you just need to capture the action. Watch for the shutter speed blinking which will indicate that the shutter speed has dropped into a 1/60 or less zone and camera shake my blur the picture. Another setting I used was AV which is aperture value still using the Fujifilm ISO 800 I would set the aperture on the lens at F5.6 my lens was an F4, if your lens is say an F3.5 you would use F4.5. In AV mode you will not have the flash pop up or the shutter speed warning. Focus is the big thing you can blur the whole picture put if the players eye are sharp and clear you just aced the shot. Motion blur shows movement but focus on the eyes open the frame up show some of the players environment and you will be the hero in the club house when the pictures come in. Another thing Don't cheap out on the processing get a good custom lab to process the film one that is going to correct the pictures not run 'em through on auto feed. Take lots of film and plan on using all of it. Cheers have fun at the game(s)

I have a Canon Rebel XS 1000D, I am having issues with my 18-55 lense. When I try to take a picture in AF it flashes but then says it is busy. What should I do

I hate asking a question to answer a question but, did you get a picture after the camera finished flashing busy? Were you using one of the program modes like portrait, close up, landscapes and so on or were you in a creative zone such as manual, AV, TV or P? Here is a good link to a review on your camera http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/canon/eos_rebel_xs-review/ it might help solve your problem. The Rebel XS is a 10.1 meg camera which is a sizable digital file my thought are it could be possible the camera is still writing the file to the media card. If the internal flash was used then the processor is writing to the file and using power to recharge the flash. It could be that the battery is low and it's taking longer to recharge the flash giving the "Busy" warning The Rebel processor is pretty darn quick and it has a decent size buffer so the write speed shouldn't be giving you a problem unless you have put some type of slow media card in it. In that case it wouldn't matter how fast the camera is if the write speed of the card is low. Also the Rebel has several "quality" settings for pictures and the higher the quality the slower it will be to process but, the Rebels processor is darn quick so this shouldn't be the issue

Canon EOS Rebel XS won't take pictures. Will turn on, access menu and display, but when you push the button the flash will "strobe" and won't take picture. Thank you for your help!!

This is a fairly new Digital camera model. A few quick things that could cause your particular problem is that the camera hasn't had a media card installed. The media card may not have been formatted to the camera. The lens is not totally locked in position. Within the menu there is a function that prevents the camera from taking a picture if there is no media card installed. If there is a media card in the camera it may be full of pictures and unable to store any more images. If the media card is not the problem then I would say that the camera is not focusing and without focus the camera will not take a picture. Look for the auto focus confirmation little green dot in the viewfinder it should be a solid green not blinking. Hope this was a help

My camera turns on but it won't focus on automatic and when I press the button to take a picture it won't take one on manuel or automatic.

There may be a few things preventing the camera from taking a picture. I don't know the lens you are using but by chance does it have an auto/manual switch that has been switched to manual? Also make sure the lens is locked in position. The camera won't take a picture unless it has focus in the auto focus mode, this is normal. What are you trying to focus on? The camera auto focus system will search and fail to auto focus on surfaces that have little or nor contrast. For example glass, chrome, a blank wall, water, blue sky. Other conditions that auto focus fails is being to close to your subject, heavy fog, a dim lit subject, available light and night photography. Once the little green confirmation light comes on the camera has focus and will operate as it should.

Brand new Canon EOS Rebel XS. Suddenly, image in the view finder is blurry. Auto focus seems to be working, and pictures are coming out fine. But sometimes, the autofocus focuses on the wrong thing, and so...

Next to the viewfinder ther is a diopter adjustment so you can change the focus in the viewfinder. this is so if you need glasses the camera can be set for you. Start by focusing the camera on something, then slide to turn the diopter adjustment until it looks sharp and try not to bump it.
