Take a look at http://www.manualowl.com/Acer%20Computers/Manuals and select the appropriate type of Acer system (laptop, notebook or desktop) then see if they have a manual for the particular system that you have. Alternatively, look at http://www.emachines.com and see if there is any help you can find on their site.
Your computer can take either DDR333 MHz or DDR400MHz (pc2700, or pc3200) NON ECC memory. Even though it can take either you need to use matching modules/ not mixed. DDR400 or pc3200 memory is faster but these are also backward compatible. The memory will only run as fast as your FSB (front side bus) rated frequency. This motherboard is built with the Intel 845 chipset and is socket 478. This particular motherboard will not support a dual core processor of any kind. This board will only support a standard socket 478 Pentium 4 processor at best. I do not know of any that will support anything better than a Pentium 4 2.8GHz processor with a 400MHz F.S.B.
Motherboards for proprietary manufacturers [such as acer] are built for them and only supplied by them. For all intents and purposes, that board is 'dead'. Acer technicians would advise that you purchase a new CPU [box] which would ship a casing, power supply, motherboard and processor, plus other hardware that a new CPU will ship with from the manufacturer. It is advised that you approach your dealer or store where this unit was purchased from for additional information.

If you get a post screen that means the board is most likely fine, if its a desktop motherboard all you have to do to wipe the password is clear the cmos, like this >>>> if you don't have a jumper (the green plastic cap) then remove the battery for 10 mins, make sure there is no mains power connected, this should wipe the password and all you have to do is set the time and date and your ready to format and install an OS
