Go into my computer and see if the dvd-rw is being recognized in there, It should be either the d: or e: drive.
If it is in there then try different disks like music cd's, game cd's movie dvds and see if it can read them and show information for them. If it can read some disks but not others then try cleaning the laser with a slightly damp q-tip with glass cleaner and then dry it off with another dry q-tip.
If it can read them all then problem solved, if it can only read some cd's or none of them then you have a bad laser and you will need to get the dvd-rw replaced.
let me tell u that cd support is built in it has nothing to do with software ur LENS is getting weak and when it starts getting weak it first stops cd reading and writing to Double check just revert back to the old situation and check if cd's work to go back go to system restore start>all programs > accessories>system tools>system restore , go back to earlier date and see if it works if it does not then as i told u ur lens is getting weak take it to warranty claim if u have one or try cleaning it as below
open the dvd tray u can see that shiny eye like thing try cleaning the lens gently in round movement with a tissue paper or very soft cloth used to clean lcd screens see if it works , other wise ur DVD drive lens got weak from use now adays service centers are getting tons of them everyday for replacements
It sounds like a hardware fault on the drive itself. The laser and focussing mechanisms are different for CDs and DVDs. The fact that the drive can read DVDs fine suggests that the laser and lenses can no longer focus correctly to deal with CDs.
Replacement of the drive would be the only fix, although you might find it a lot easier to buy an external USB DVD drive.
Type of media settings might be the issue but making a change for standard CD/DVD recording (it affects reading too) Issue can be resolved. Right click on the CD/DVD drive (Usually D drive ) click on properties and select and choose the recording option. Click the enable CD recording for this drive option
Click on apply and OK. Try again. You may try after reboot the computer. If issue persist please post so we can think about some alternate solutions.
