Padded shoe inserts can help distribute pressure evenly when you move your feet, reducing your symptoms and preventing your bunion from getting worse. Over-the-counter arch supports can provide relief for some people, though others may require prescription orthotic devices.

Replace pads

Be sure that the old inserts from the old shoes have been removed from the pods. They often break off inside and have to be dug out. Once you're sure the holes are empty make sure the new shoes are properly oriented, as one of the inserts is larger than the other. This prevents the shoe from being installed backwards. You have to press pretty hard to get the shoes to pop in.

What is a bunionectomy?

  • A bunionectomy is a surgery that removes all the swollen tissue from the area of the big toe joint. Your big toe will be straightened by taking away part of the bone. The long bone between the back of your foot and big toe will be realigned so the big toe joint will become straight. This joins the affected joint bones together permanenetly.

Is wearing shoes that fit too tightly the only way bunions form?

That is the most common cause, but bunions can also develop as a result of an inherited structural defect or stress on your foot or a medical condition, for example arthritis.

I have a pair of Stonefly mens shoes that despite years of intermittent use remain in very good condition, except for one area that I would like to repair, if possible. The heel areas of the black shoe...

You can try a sole guard which goes right over the heal an can help from them crack any further. Click here for some examples or options. If that doesn't work then you can simply try going to a shoe repair store and ask them to replace the heal. If you do get new soles then to prevent cracking you can use waterproofer to shield the heels from water damage. If home repairs do not help, then you will have to take them to get professionally repaired or replaced.
