Open Question

Engine malfunction Tecumseh Model: TVT 691 600803A Family Type YTPXS 6912AA. Problem is motor surges at 1/2 Full throttle, "missing" and back-firing. Plugs have been replaced, Engine parts cleaned. Is this a problem with the governor, sync problem with the twin carburetors, or other? Do You have suggestions for fixing this, and where to get a repair manual for this motor?

SOURCE: throttle control won't work after i cleaned the

Hi again Ed,
Starting at the carb throttle shaft, your linkage rod (with tiny spring wrapped around it) should be connected directly to the governor's arm. If there's more than one hole in the arm, connect the rod in the upper-most hole.
Now, at the base of the governor's arm is another hole (possibly on a tab jutting from the arm). The main governor spring should be hooked in this hole and then back to the sliding throttle control that moves when the lever on the dash is moved. (This one definitely has a tab and hole.)

The choke cable end hooks directly on the choke shaft and it has intuitive movement. Verify that the choke butterfly closes and opens relative to the cable control on the tractor's dash.

To insure that we only do this procedure ONCE, and we get it right the first time, let's set the internal governor to base-line at this time.

With everything bolted back up, move the throttle control lever on the tractor's dash to full throttle. Then get a 3/8 wrench and a slotted screwdriver and locate the round governor shaft coming out of the engine block. The governor arm attaches to this with a clamping-bolt. You will notice that the round shaft is slotted for a screwdriver as well.
Loosen the clamping bolt slightly with your 3/8 wrench, insert your screwdriver and rotate the round shaft clockwise until it stops. (It has VERY little travel, so turn it both ways to verify that your are at FULL clockwise position.)
Hold screwdriver there and move the governor's arm in the same (clockwise) direction until the carb's throttle is set to WIDE OPEN throttle. Still holding the screwdriver clockwise, retighten the clamping bolt with the wrench.
Next, move the throttle lever on the dash of the tractor to idle and back to full several times and observe the carb's throttle shaft, it should come down from full throttle to idle and back again freely.

Start the engine and be prepared to shut it off if it over-revs.
If it doesn't over-rev, your base-line settings are correct.

By bending the tab on the sliding throttle control (the one that has the main spring attached) you can now increase or decrease spring tension and change top speed of the engine. Do this in small increments and if you have a tachometer for single cylinder's set top speed to 3400-3600 RPM.

Sorry this is lengthy, but as mentioned above, we only want to do this once.

Hope this helps, and feel free to ask away if you need more info!

SOURCE: I have a 9hp Tecumseh engine on my Sears chipper

I will try again here.
1 wire link from the top hole in the governor arm to the throttle on the carb. There should also be a wire link with a spring that goes from the Governor arm to the speed control handle.

Troy-Bilt w/Tecumseh HMSK 80-110 engine. Where can I get a repair manual covering the carburetor OR a picture showing carb linkages?

There are a couple of reasons this could be happening.
1- The throttle shaft could be frozen or gummed up where the throttle shaft sits in the carburetor body.
2 - Check the top of the throttle shaft where the shaft meets the plate, if it is loose or separated it will not allow the throttle plate to move.
3 - The governor spool may be damaged internally in the engine.
Added a couple of Tecumseh manuals below.

I have a 10 hs tecumseh motor on a riding mower i need an explode view of carb and linkage when start-up engine it goes wide open

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly. I understand you have a 10 HP Tecumseh engine. There are service manuals available on line for your engine but without your engine model number it is difficult to pass you the correct one: Here is the link for the service manuals:
http://www.mymowerparts.com/pdf/Tecumseh_Service_and_Repair_Manuals

Somewhere in the list is your manual.
This is my best guess without your engine model number:
http://www.mymowerparts.com/pdf/Tecumseh_Service_and_Repair_Manuals/TECUMSEH_SERVICE%20_REPAIR_MANUAL_OHH50-65_OHHSK50-130_OHV11-OHV17_OVM120_OVRM40-675_OVRM120_OVXLC120_OVXL120_OVXL125_695244A.pdf

^-Make sure you read about Adjustments in section 1 also.

Running wide open causes:
1. Broken throttle control plate spring
2. Governor spring problem
3. Internal Governor flyweight has departed the governor gear.
4. Throttle plate (butterfly) attached to the throttle shaft in the carb throat has come off the throttle shaft.
5. Broken / missing linkage
6. Someone loosened the governor shaft bolt at the base of the governor arm and allowed the governor to get out of adjstment.

Thanks for choosing FixYa,
Kelly

The tecumseh engine surges from medium to full throtle

If it is at full throttle and the engine speed lowers then raises again to full throttle - back and forth, this is a sign that the engine is starving for fuel. The most common area is the lower jet in the carb. has trash in it or it is gummed up. You would have to remove the bowl on the carb. to have access to it. Check with Tecumseh's website and see if they offer any info "parts breakdowns" to see if the jets come out of the carb. some are fixed in the body and you cannot remove. Good Luck.

Need replacement spark plug for 4.5 hp Tecumseh; model number YTPXS

In my shop, I use Autolite brand plugs. Your engine would have come originally with a #255 or equivilent. Most shops will upgrade that plug to a #458. It is slightly hotter and gives a more efficient burn. You can also use a Champion J19LM or an NGK B4LM.
Good luck!

Motor surges at full throttle

The timing is not the problem if your bike is surging at top end. The timing is fixed on these models and it's not like the old days or like a car. Your problem can be one of many.
First: does the bike idle ok after it is hot?
Second: Have you changed the air filter to an after market type? Changing the filter to an after market filter will lean the motor out which will cause a "surge" at full throttle. You will need to possible jet the motor richer to compensate for the leaner filter design.
Third: Try rolling out og the throttle from full throttle by about 1/8th and see if the engine RPM's increase and the surge goes away, if so the motor is to lean.
Let me know the answers to these questions and I can help you resolve your problem.
Third: how long has it been since you have set the valves? a tight valve can cause many many problems including this one.
