When I scan a document the scanner sounds like it's done something, but nothing comes up on the screen, so I'm assuming nothing is saved - can't find anaything! This all worked fine a few months ago on my old computer which was running XP. I would like to know if this is a problem with my Canon MP510 or compatibility with Windows Vista Home Basic.

This sounds like the printer is timing out before transferring the image to the PC. It may be due to the cable between the PC and printer. Do you have a another cable (6-feet or less) to try.

Usually, the scanner software will ask you where to save a file after the scan.
It will often name the item automatically and save it to your MY DOCUMENTS or MY PICTURES folder.
I find that its best to rename the file and select the NEW FOLDER icon.
Type in a name for the folder that you wont forget like "Baby Pix" or "Vacation Pictures" and save it there.
The reason for this is that if for some reason if it doesn't save to the MY DOCUMENTS folder and you forget where you put it, you can do a general search of your computer and find it. As its unlikely that there will be any other files/folders with that name.

Scanning with [Start] on the Machine
By pressing [SCAN] [Start] on the operation panel of the machine, you can scan
documents to your computer.
Pressing [SCAN] [Start] has the same effect as clicking [Save] in the MF Toolbox.
You can change the settings for [Save], or set up a button other than [Save] to
perform the same operation. (See “Setting the Scanning Function for [Start],” on p.

NOTE
You can use the machine for only a local scanner (connected directly to your computer).
1 Place the document face-down on the platen glass or load it
face-up in the ADF
2 Press [SCAN] [Start] on the machine.
If you are asked to select a program to launch, select “MF Toolbox Ver4.7.”
Scanning starts.
The MF Toolbox and the [Save] dialog box will open, but the document will be
scanned without pressing [Start] in the [Save] dialog box.
The scanned document will be processed according to your settings.
When you use [Start] for the first time, a folder with the scanning date will be created in
the [My Pictures] folder in the [My Documents] folder, and your document will be
saved in this folder. If there is no [My Pictures] folder, the folder with the scanning date
will be created in the [My Documents] folder and your document will be saved in this

If will need to install the software that came with the printer. If you already did that, you can start HP directory by clicking the HP icon on the right hand side of the task bar. Then click "Scan document" or "Scan Picture" depending on what you need to scan. If you select "save to disk" option, the program will ask you where to save the file.

My canon printer wont scan my picture to my hp computer

You will need to have installed the software that comes with your printer for scanning and the other functions before these buttons will work.

There may also be settings in the software which dictate what the buttons will do that need to be defined.

I'd check your CD and see if there's anything you didn't bother to install originally and then see if that fixes the problem.

Cant figure out how to scan something

You can start scanning a document two dfferent ways--from the printer or from your computer. With either method, the first thing you need to do is place whatever you want to scan face down on the glass of the printer. Close the top cover.

If you want to do everything from the printer, press the button with the diamond on it. "Save Photo" should appear on your computer. You can then choose a name for the file and a location where you want to save it.

To proceed from the computer instead, you can start the Lexmark Imaging Studio. Click "Scan," select the Document option, and then click "Start."

That should get you started!

How do i save a picture i scanned on my pc

Scanners use a method of interacting with applications called TWAIN. Go into the application you want the picture and insert from twain source. It'll scan and load the image. Your scanner probably came with a software for loading and saving images, but if you haven't got one...IRFANVIEW is free.

are you pressing ok on the printer? all of your scanning should be done via the MP460 navigator. check your applications under the Canon Utlitiy and click on the MP460 Navigator button. scanning needs to be done via that - not the actual printer. refer to the dialogue box when you are on the MP460 navigator. lower left area has a Save bar, when you click on it tow options: save to PC or save as PDF.
