I recommend taking the back cover off, and getting under the buttons with a lint-less cloth, and swab it off with a dab of alcohol. It could be that a button is stuck.  Of course, I would check all of the settings first to see if there is something to fix it there.

E-410 blocking

Sounds like it don't communicate with the card. Try checking if some dust or dirt has blocked the connectors. If so, blow it away with compressed air or a blower intended for photographic gear. If there is dirt on the connectors, try cleaning gently using a pencil eraser (and blow the reminds away).
Since you tried another card that's probably not the problem, but remember it's important to erase the card (in the camera!) after transferring the content to your computer...
Hope any of this helps. :)

The machine won't erase my tapes? Is there a chance it could be a faulty machine?

Does the erase light come on and the tape rewinds? Or does it just beep when you try? Could be a bad erase switch, sometimes pressing harder will do the trick. If it just beeps, try another tape.

How do i delete pictures from my camera

You don't tell us what kind of camera you have, so it's rather difficult to tell; however here are the general principles that apply to most cameras.

You should be viewing photos, rather than being ready to take another one.

To erase one picture, press the button that has an icon of a trash can on it. You will be asked to confirm that you want to erase it.

To erase all pictures on your memory card, again from 'playback' mode, press the menu button - you'll have to search for the "erase all" function because it won't be too easy to find (deliberately). If you see a scroll bar, you may have to press "down" until you can see the options that are off the screen, but it should be there.

Any problems, post back with the model number of the camera.

Protective card when trying to take picture-

If you are using an SD card for the memory, there is a small, locking switch on the side of it. Slide it in the opposite direction to where it is now, and you should be able to shoot and erase again.

Erasing the memory card;

All pictures in the internal memory and/or on the memory card can be erased at once. This is accomplished through either formatting or the "all-frame erase" function. I copied the following instructions from the advanced manual, which can be downloaded here: http://www.olympusamerica.com/files/d545zadvman.pdf. Adobe reader should open that file with no problem. If it doesn't, that's another issue altogether.

1. Enter playback mode by pressing the play button.
2. Press the OK MENU button.
3. Press the right arrow button (next to the lightning bolt) to access [MODE MENU]
4. Then, press the down arrow to access the [MEMORY(CARD)] tab.
5. Select the [ALL ERASE] function.
6. Select Yes and press OK MENU.

(You'll need to use the arrow buttons to navigate the menus. Please see pg 16 of the manual for instructions on how to do so.)

Note: when the memory card is in the camera, it will erase the pictures off the card. When the card is removed, the function above will erase the internal memory.

How do i erase all pictures in one go from olympus x-820

You go to the menu in Review mode and on the Play tab you will see a function for Erase and under there is a function called All Erase. This will erase all of the images at one time. There is also an option to go to Setup and go to Format option. This will also erase all images at once but they will be gone permanently from the memory card.

Erasing multiple pictures off card manually

you can erase ALL data on the card (all pictures) and not a chosen few as this camera is not having that option.
to erase all pictures simply FORMAT the card in the "FUNCTION" MENU .

when it "freezes" it's usually just taken a picture (easy to accidentally press the shutter) and is showing it to you--press save (left function) or erase (right) then is ready for another--can tell because the picture is moving as you move the phone
