Question about Briggs & Stratton Lawn-Boy Insight Series 21-Inch 190cc 650 Series Gas Powered Engine Variable Speed Self-Propelled Lawn Mower
Okay, so, I was using the mower and it just died out of nowhere (I didn't hit anything). I went to start it back up and then the rope was yanked out of my hand. I did some research and found that it was probably the flywheel key. I looked at the key and everything was fine. I replaced it anyway. I pulled the head off to see when it was firing... everything seemed to be normal. put everything back together and it is still snapping the pull string from my hand. I went ahead and cleaned the carb as well as the tank and checked the fuel lines. I am not sure on where to go from here.. Is the mower toast?
Sounds like ur timing gears have jumped a cog or two. That's the gears at the crankshaft to the camshaft. Pretty big job if you don't know what you are doing.

Oil on the plug might mean you have excessive cylinder wear and it is causing oil to get into the engine and foul the plug.
You can try to a new plug and see if it runs longer before fouling but realistically you are probably looking at getting a new mower very soon.

SOURCE: lawn mower starts but makes
I hope this helps you. :
I would recommend using carburetor cleaner and flush out the jets.

The flywheel key could be sheared. This is a problem that occurs if you have hit anything with the blade. It usually takes quite a hit to knock out the flywheel key. Here is a video to help you replace the flywheel key.

time to pull the hose off the fuel pump coming from the tank and drain the tank and check flow of gas coming from tank hose, and possibly inline fuel filter is plugged or there is junk in your tank/line from tank not letting enough fuel to run to pump so pump can pump it to carb !

Add some fuel stabilizer to your gas, try starting again, if this doesn't work check your fuel line coming from the tank make sure it is not pluged if you have a fuel filter replace it with a new one.
