1 go to the start menu
2 Right click computer
3 Click manage
4 Go to the storage tab and open it (its in the box on the left side of the screen)
5 Click disk management
6 look for your unusable drive.
7 If the bar is black and it does not say online then you are going to right click the small box on the left side that says "disk X"
8 Pick the 1st option
9 after hitting next a time or two you will have 2 choices to pic from one says something like mass boot or something along them lines do not select that one pick the 2nd option.
10 Hit next till the window closes
11 If the bar is still black right click the black bar
12 Select 1st option
13 Hit next till you see a box that says something like quick format and check that box.
14 Again hit next till its finishes
15 after you finish that the window should show the box with that black bar turn blue and the box on the left will say online.

Sorry i dont have all the terms but i just got help myself and trying to help you all out as well.

Device Manager only says that the disk is getting AC power, and that the "data" cable is connected, and that Windows has recognized the specific device-information (that it is a disk-drive, and that the capacity of the disk-drive has been recognized).
Device Manager does not say that the "spinning" part of the disk-drive is still spinning, nor that there are any I/O errors (trying writing with a pen onto greased paper -- not everything you write can be read).

Try connecting the MyBook to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting the MyBook to a different computer.
If it still is not "readable", then you have a few options:

* if the warranty still is valid, exercise the warranty, to get it repaired/replaced,
* disassemble the case, disconnect the disk-drive from the USB-to-disk-drive adapter, and connect the disk-drive as a "slave" drive in some desktop computer, to see if the USB-to-disk-drive adapter has failed
* buy a replacement disk-drive, connect it to that USB-to-disk-drive adapter, and close the case, to create a "new" external disk-drive.

I fixed that problem with a WDC My Book Home 1TB in Windows 7:

The drive was recognized in computer management and in device manager but no drive letter was allocated while connected with a e-sata cable.

1.in computer management > storage > disk management
2.rightclick drive 1 or wathever the number of the WDC drive (which should be basic at this time)
3.select 'convert to dynamic disk'
4.drive should get a drive letter
5.format (warning: all data get lost, but you can download original software from wdc.com)

Succes!
