Check timing first, if it's off set it.
If it is off and does not want to set, meaning it never stays where you set it, could be timing chain wear.

That is a mechanical timing issue with the crank and the cam. IF the engine has a lot of miles on it, you may need to overhaul the timing gears and chain. If you rebuilt it, the timing is not right.

I have a 1964 Chevy Malibu, 230 L-6, what should the timing be set at?

There is no good answer as factory timing assumes brand new engine and all stock exhaust, ignition etc parts, plus kind of hard to buy 1964 gas. I would start at 4% Before TDC. Then drive the car at WOT to see how it runs. Advance timing a little at a time to see when you begin to get pre-ignition, then back off just a bit. Always check the vacuum advance and mechanical advance units for proper operation first. I have a 63 Bel Air with the 230 engine and found some prior owner had replaced the advance springs with very weak ones in an apparent attempt to gain power. Result was the dizzy was advanced so much at low rpm no real advance happened as the rpms increased so it ran very poorly. A bad vacuum unit also creates havoc with timing.

2004 Yard Machine Rider is backfiring through carb any solution? I've tried replacing the plug, checked the key and cleaned out carb bowl.It was running fine then this happened.

Hi, check and adjust the valve clearences. When you do this take the piston 1/8 inch past top dead centre on the compression stroke and check the clearence, it should be around 5 thou on the inlet valve and 7 thou on the exhaust. regards Phil.

1990 jaguar xj6 poor idle

Backfires are caused by lean operation. Vacuum leak is likely.

My truck back fires and runs rough

Since the truck was running fine before the wires/spark plugs change, we'll look into these 2.1. Check your wires. As NS said you may have misplaced some of them.2. If all wires are in their normal position then check for wire to wire or wire to ground spark. This is better done with the engine running and it's dark under the hood. Any spark that can be seen will be a problem.3. Check your spark plugs making sure they're gaped correctly. A brand new set may have a defective one. Please feel free to let me know if I can help more.

87 chevy hesitates only when in gear ???

The hard shifting is the result of your engine problem. Not sure whant kind of carbureter you have or wheather you have a distributor vacuum advance or not. It really sounds as though you have a base igntion timing probem. The distributor vacuum advance should be connected to manifold vacuum. Im assuming also that this is not a factory stock engine.

What would make my 1999 Chevy Blazer 4x4 with a 4.3L Vortec engine suddenly start backfiring?

I know there are a lot of solutions here but I would concentrate on a couple of known issues for the 99 4.3l engine. Remove the distributor cap and rotor, check the reluctor wheel under the rotor and make sure it is not loose on the distributor shaft. The other issue is a worn distributor gear, you will notice a lot of freeplay when you try rotating the distributor rotor back and forth.
Last but not least, spray the inside of the distributor cap, the rotor and the inside of the distributor, this will remove and prevent moisture build up causing the backfire issue you are experiencing...
Good luck.

Changed plugs wires cap rotor when I changed wires did one at a time so I would not mix up on they go onto rotor know van runs like s%#! checked to see if one wire was not on all the way but they all seem...

I do this for a living and have for 25+ years. To this day when I do it I have know idea how I messed them up but i do it some times. Even when I think i am doing them one at a time. Double check your firing order (see picture below). If that's not it check the Distributer cap & rotor for any cracks or flaws. Then check the plugs for being wrong or faulty such as cracks as well. that's all I can think about at this point for you unless you knocked a vacuum line off somehow and that's possible too. I hope this helps and good luck.

1996 gmc jimmy wont start seems like advanced timing issue backfiring out throttlebody, replaced timing pick up, distribitor cap, crank sensor, ICM, when ignition conrol module replace the engine ran fine...

You said the problem happened right after the engine was replaced correct? If so bring number cylinder to top dead center on the compression stroke. Remove the distributor cap and see if the rotor is lined up with the number one spark plug wire. It's possible the distributor was installed 180 degrees out.
