There is a red line that goes completely vertically down one side of my screen when I have the screen slanted at a certain angel... wondering if I can fix this?

The vertical line are mostly caused by a defective LCD panel.

Line, faults & possible causes to LCD screen are given with illustrations. You can get an idea about the fault to an extent.

The card may not be set into the slot properly. Make certain the computer is OFF when you check the interior of the computer case. Crossing the tangs (small flat pins on the board) can damage the controller, so be careful when inserting or pulling it out. Press down firmly on the top of the card and seat the card so it won't move side to side. Reattach your Computer Monitor cable in the correct position and screw down the attachments to make a positive connection. Check the Monitor and see if the Cable is well attached also. Start up and see if that fixted the problem. If not the Controller is defective.

Unfortunately this will be a fault with the screen itself & would need to be replaced. There is a slught possibility the LVDS connector that goes from the mian signal board to the screen may have a poor contact. To check this you would need to remove the rear cover & look for a flat cable connector that sits into a socket located in the upper centre of the screen. This usually has a clip on either side of the connector to release it. If you give the contacts a wipe to clean them & then carefully re-connect the cable it may cure the problem, only a small percentage of the time will this be the problem in most cases it is a new screen required.

Your TV most likely a convergence failure. ( common problem )

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

SOLUTION

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses. Its a fairly easy DIY job or you can call in a pro. If you want to do the repair yourself check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, thermal paste, email/phone support, etc.

did you check the six 3.5 pico fuses that are next to the ICs? They will often be open ( blown) when the ICs fail. Also check the two 5 amp IC protectors on the G board as those protect the two ICs so its possible they have blown also a 5 amp pico can be substituted for the two IC protectors.

The panel is almost certainly bad. The only fix for this is to replace the whole panel which would cost more than the whole TV.

you have to have the entire screen replaced. hitachi tried to fix mine twice and couldnt, i finally took them to court and won. want my advice? get a new tv and never by a hitachi again!!! they are the worst!

I'm not an expert, but I have determined that the vertical bars that are often red, sometimes blue ... and sometimes both ... are related to a bad control board. I've also read that a common fix is to buy a repair kit with includes the ysus, zsus and control boards ... all replaced together. My experience was that after a month or two with the 1.5" wide stripes, that you eventually loose the entire picture and have sound only. MIne comes back, but won't stay working for very long and the stripes are always there (buy used to fade and flicker sometimes). I'm planning on replacing the control board.
