Vertical lines

Sounds like your screen went bad.
Close the lid, attach an external monitor, open lid and see if the screen appears on the monitor.

Resetting the PRAM may do the trick also:
You reset the PRAM by rebooting a Mac and then immediately hold down the Command+Option+P+R keys, you will then hear the Mac reboot sound again, signifying your PRAM has been reset. You must hit the key combination before the grey screen appears otherwise it won't work.

Happy New Year,
Kerry

This sounds like a problem with the connector, or cable, rather than the LCD screen itself. If the screen is fine while pressing on it, it's probably Ok. My similar problem turned out to be the cable. ifixit.com has great troubleshooting and repair advice. (Your pressing finger getting tired yet?)

The screen goes blank on a certain angle

The hinge is probably pinching the LVDS cable or else the cable is loose/tight. This requires a complete tear down and reseating the video cabling.

My LCD powerbook G4 has a white vertical line

This is usually symptomatic of a chafed or pinched LVDS cable, especially if the line comes and goes as you work the hinges. This not a user-replaceable part. If the line does not flicker when the hinges are moved, there is a possibility that your LCD screen itself has gone bad.

I am running off memory, but I belive you can also hold either Option or Command key at chime startup and it will give you a visual option with booting to hard drive or disk drive.

Try that and see if it will show the option to boot from CD.

I would suggest probably reinstalling OS X

Do you havea serial # i can try look it up see if have inverter sep

White line on screen ??

Being a whole vertical row of pixels, I'm afraid it does sound like dead pixels on the LCD.

Before splashing out on a new LCD it would be worth re-seating the connection to the screen. The cable goes up through the hinge so wIth the constant opening and closing the cable can get moved or pinched. I have seen that in the past. Normally that would effect the whole display but it's worth a look at.

Have you had a mac techie look at it? They would check for that before charging you for a new LCD.
You can save some money by picking up spares on ebay. Just depends on if you are confident enough to fit it yourself. As it is not that easy!

Sorry I cannot be of more help.
