On the computer itself, the whole back case will slide off or take out the screws and slide it off. From the inside, you can see the DVD Burner. Double check to make sure that on the back of the burner all the plugs coming off of it are plugged in (might not have power). If they are plugged in, three things could be your problem, you either need to buy and download the software for the burner to make sure it is working with your computer. Sometimes people delete stuff off the computer and it may have been deleted on accident. You might need a whole new tray alltogether because its broke and no longer works. Or it might be as simple as a broken piece of plastic on the tray that is not allowing it to open. No one can tell you for sure what the problem is without looking at it, but if you check these couple things, you will find out.

Dell cd drive door won't open

CD/DVD Drive Tray problems
There are two ways to open the CD/DVD drive door if the button just below the drive tray does not work.
Go to My Computer and right click on the drive and click on Eject.
If this does not work then you can manually open the CD/DVD drive tray by -
Straighten a paper clip and gently insert it into a tiny hole below the drive tray next to the Eject button. Push the paper clip gently until the drive tray pops out, then pull the tray until it is fully out, then you can remove the CD/DVD disc.
If you still having problem opening with the Eject button, then the CD/DVD drive is faulty and needs replacing.

My Dvd rom tray will not open. How do I fix the issue?

The DVD drive should probably open and close it's tray with the computer either way. See the Owner's or User's manual for the model concerning that, but most if not all optical drives will work either way, and a disk can be inserted in them either way. You could also look up the model that's displayed in Device Manager for the DVD drive on the web to see what it's specs are. If it's supposed to work either way, something inside the drive - probably a plastic part - has probably come loose or is broken off, or the rubber drive belt for the opening / closing mechanism may be slipping when the drive is vertical but not when it's horizontal, and that prevents the tray from opening when the drive is vertical. If that really bugs you, replace the drive with a new standard combo DVD burner drive (burns and reads both DVDs and CDs).
It may be possible that your drives are not receiving any power. Are any of the LEDs at the front of your drive on at any time? If not, then it is almost certain that your drives have become disconnected from your motherboard.

If this is the case, just open up your computer and make sure that there are at least 2 cables going to each of your drives and that the power cable (which should have white ends with 4 pins) is indeed connected to your drive on one end and your power supply on the other end.

Hope, this guidance will help you
Thanks

My CD-rom will not work after inserting CD's or DVD will not rev-up what wrong and what should I Do I Have Inspiron 531????

1.The laser optical eye of the CD-ROM drive may be dirty, and needs cleaning.
If the optical eye is dirty, it won't read the information on the disk you install.

A) Computer on, Windows loaded, open the tray of the DVD-ROM drive. (Or DVD burner drive. Whichever drive you are referring to. DVD-R/RW)
Shut the computer down normally. (Start>Turn Off Computer>Shut Down)

Unplug the computer from power.
Use a can of compressed air fror computers, and spray air into the DVD-ROM drive.

The optical eye, is located on the bottom of the DVD-ROM drive. (Or burner drive)
The opening in the bottom of the tray, that comes out for your disk, is where you spray the air.

You won't be able to see the optical eye, so how will you know you are spraying the air at the correct place?

If you start at the front of the bottom of the DVD-ROM drive, and work your way towards the back, you will clean the optical eye. Spray across from side to side, and in rows, as you proceed towards the rear.

(Air will make it's way through, and reach the optical eye. The optical eye is not visible, as it can be harmful to the human eye when operating.
Laser.
When the tray is closed the optical eye is exposed. It is not exposed to where it can harm the computer user.

More information that may be helpful, in understanding where the optical eye is located,

2.Make Windows reinstall the drivers.
This solution requires physically removing the flat ribbon cable from the back of the DVD-ROM/DVD burner drive, then reattaching it.

Software advice of Updating the drivers, Rollback the drivers, or downloading, and installing the drivers, doesn't always work, or doesn't work.

If the physical solutions I am providing here does not work, we will proceed to the software solutions if you wish. (Comment)

(Plays CD's and DVD's, and records)

DVD-R/RW is a 'Burner drive'.

If the information above is correct, you have a SATA power cable, and a SATA Data cable.
(The Data cable transfers information from the optical drive, to the computer, and vice-versa)

The SATA power cable connector, is longer than the Data cable connector.
The power cable connector has 15 pins.
The Data cable connector has 7 pins.

Information,
