Question about Xantrex Technology Trace Series Inverter / Charger 1500w

2 Answers

I have a motor home with a Trace inverter/charger. When the unit is connected to shore power the system will recarge the battery pack fine. When they are charged the remote meter will switch from bulk charge to float charge. The problem is when we are dry docked and attemt to charge the batteries with the generator system, the charge rate stays on bulk charge mode constantly. I have had the generator checked out by a certified teck and all is good there. The only places in my area that service invertors is a marina and they want me to send them just the invertor.I would like to have it tested in the coach as there may be a problem in the coach as well. Can anybody give me some advise

Suggest you check all your terminal connections for corrosion. I just had exactly the same problem with a Xantrex inverter/charger, it appeared to be stuck in charge mode. I disconnected all terminals, cleaned them and in the process found two with corossion not visable before disconnection. Problem solved

More than likely you may a a relay that is stuck or not energizing which should switch the charging mode over automatically. Trace back from the generator to the charging circuit for the batteries. I'm not sure where the relay (or solinoid) would be located but you can be assured it is something in the charger sensing/switching circuit.

Good Luck! Gary

Can't find the transfer switch, and could it go bad. Shore power and generator power works to the main panel box, but won't charge coach batteries

although it is possible to do separately most times the transfer switch is internal to the inverter , and the fact you mention that inverter is not charging batteries tells me your fault lay in the inverter all or part of it is not working , look at it carefully these have sometimes two reset breakers on there cases

Trace, no power from line one from either gen set or shore power. Have rebooted, and when I invert the coach works normal. Charge system to house and coach batts perfec

If a normal install, the shore power and generator will go through a transfer switch then to the inverter. If when inverting 120 VAC circuits are OK, then the problem must be before the inverter. I would suspect that it is the transfer switch.

Disconnect shore power, make sure generator in NOT running then take a look at the transfer switch these are in a boat or RV but either can lead to vibration problems which can lead to loosening wire connections which can lead to heating and burning. It may be something as simple as a wire coming loose. (Which could be dangerous!)
Whether or not the contacts in the relays are OK, check and/or tighten all electrical connections. It's a good idea to check and tighten all electrical connections regularly.

Some transfer switches can be repaired by replacing just the relays. Other units (like mine this year!) will need to be replaced entirely.

WILL A TRACE 2012 INVERTER RUN A 15000 BTU RV AIR CONDITIONER

According to specs, they will take a 44 amp AC power surge. Obviously number and type of batteries as well as battery condition , etc, plugged in, not plugged in to outside hydro, or generator all come in to play here, but a 15,000 BTU roof AC will only draw, 15-17Amps AC when compressor kicking in, ( or less on some new models) and should level out at 12 -13 amp draw after. As well, this will depend on proper wiring to and from main panel as well as AC unit, and incoming voltage, AC unit condition ( cleaned and maintained properly) etc.

Your Freedom 458 has died. At this point, you need to isolate the batteries from the inverter / charger unit to prevent further risk of fire.

It is normal, with the fried charger, for the battery voltage to plummet even while plugged in. There is no converter to maintain them. When you start your rig, the alternator on the engine is charging the batteries. With the rapid drop in battery voltage, your inverter likely is shorted.

Remove the main battery fuse between the inverter and batteries, as well as unplug / turn off the breaker to the inverter /charger. Take your coach to the nearet service center, as it may still be under (partial?) warranty.

Inverting side working fine but charger is not

I had a similar problem at work yesterday.when your charger switches of it assumes that the battery is fully charged, while it is not.this is the solution , switch on you inverter machine and allow it to run, while it is running use a direct current "dc" multi meter a test the voltages of the batteries any one that drops like 3 volts below the normal voltage is bad. Change it and you will notice that the problem will stop. Note that when a battery is bad it takes little time to get it charged than when it is in a good condition .

the solar panel is just to charge your inverter,if it is charging and the inverter is on it will drain the current the solar panel is supplying to the batteries, this makes it look like it is not charging ,so i advice you to switch off you inverter when charging it,get another set of batteries connected to your solar panel then charge both, let them be separated so that the new one is not in use so that when solar is out you can switch to the other set of batteries

My tram 2512 is stuck in waiting for AC mode, ac is clearly reaching the unit, both by shore power and genset. What could the problem be?

If you are referring to a Trace 2412 inverter, which series is it? An SW or a DR series? In either case, if it won't accept generator power, but the AC input indicator is flashing, the problem is most likely the generator output power is off frequency or voltage. Trace inverters will only connect when the AC input is within certain limits. I'd suggest checking the frequency and voltage output of the generator. If it won't connect to shore power, check the voltage from that source. Make the voltage checks at the inverter input terminals.

Trace DR 2412 inverter won't run older front-loading washer

IF your washing machine is a conventional model with a common AC induction motor, waveform isn't the problem. Normal starting current for typical AC induction motors is usually 5 to 7 times the rated running current. Even though that current draw only lasts a fraction of a second, it's marginal for a 2.4 kw inverter's surge capacity. The trick of switching on other small loads (preferably resistive loads like incandescent bulbs) before starting the washer may help. Another area to check is your battery cables and connections The inverter pulls a huge amount of current to produce it's max surge output and even a little resistance in the battery circuit may cause the inverter to trip off. If you've got one of the fancy new electronic controlled washers with a D.C. motor, (so called energy saving or high efficiency models) then the waveform may be an issue and a pure sine wave might be needed.
