Question about GE GSS25LGM Side by Side Refrigerator

1 Answer

I have a GE side by side GS25LGM. The fridge side gets too cold that it freezes the vegetables. There is a humidity control on the vegetable bin. It didn't matter if I set it to high or low it still freezes the vegetables. There are no dampers in the fridge that I can adjust the temp. The temp is already set to the lowest level #1 and it is still cold.

Try turning down the thermostat for the freezer side some times the controls seem backward. However most fridges are desighned for thwe freezer side with some thought giving to pushing some air to the refrige side. in most cases it easier to start back at medium settingsfor two or three days.

My Kenmore side by side fridge isn't cooling hardly. Feeling the suction and discharge lines I think it's low on freon. How do I charge it?

Well I have to go, so I can't wait for your reply for more info. Basicallty what happened to me was the freezer became very good at freezing. The problem with modern freezer/fridges is that there is only one cooling system, the freezer. The freezer chills the other side to chill the refrigerator. Something was blocking that vent into the fridge side. Turns out it was ice blocking the vent into the refer side. It happens when it is humid and the kids to "shopping" in the fridge and leave the door opened for extended periods of time.

If you are blocked by stuff in your fridge, move it away from the vent. If nothing there, you'll need to get ready for a bit of time. Side-by-side freezer/fridges, typically the freezer is on the left. So, open the fridge, somewhere near the back about 2/3s of the way down, just above the vegetable bin, on the left side. Remove the cover, if something is stuck in there, gently try to remove it. If it is ice, like I had, you should remove your vegetable bin and meat bin and unplug the unit (to prevent shock as water will be everywhere. Be sure that your overflow tray (under the unit) is empty. Next is to make quite a bit of boiling water (I ended up using just over a gallon). If you are at the point where you can't get the cover off, you'll have to use a baster to melt the ice that is holding your vent cover on (that is where I started). Then you can start working on the ice. You need to keep putting water in until you get hot water in the overflow tray. Replace your food and don't slam the fridge control all the way to the coldest setting, you could end up freezing your meat and vegetables.

The repairman came and told us, he could do this for us for $200 or we could do it ourselves. He would have done the exact same thing.

The vegetable bin freezes, fruits and veggies, such as oranges. we have changed settings and nothing seems to work

It sounds like to me that you might be getting additional cold air from the freezer side. Several models have an adjustable vent that allows cold air from the freezer into the storage bin on the fridge side. Close that vent and that should solve the problem.

Make sure this fan is running. You may have to hold the door switch in for it to run. There is a flap you adjust with the fridge temp. control. Make sure it's opening and closing when you adjust the fridge temp.
The problem could be the electronic control if you have one or the mechanical linkages.

My Kenmore Elite freezes vegetables in the vegetable bin on one side. The interior temperature is set at 46. How can I keep food from freezing? The vents are kept open as well.....any suggestions?

Hi, this problem is going to be with the running thermostat (cold Control). It has gone bad and stays open which in turn will keep the compressor running continually and will cause the fridge to get colder and freeze food. It can normally be located in the control panel inside the fridge (it is the control that has wires, the other is the damper). Locate the thermostat and replace it. If you have any other questions or concerns please feel free to comment again. Good Luck!! Mike

The side by side fridge either cools too much (at times freezing the vegetables in the bins) or stops cooling (when it starts getting opened a bit morethan few times a day)

This sounds like an intermittent bad cold control. If you catch it off and hear nothing running and it is warming up, use the handle of a butter knife and rap the knob of the cold control. If it pops on, you must replace the control. Good luck, AJ

Vegetable section too cold, freezing the vegetables

if youd like you can remove the affected crisper, locate the "adjustment slidelever" and remove it, behind there youll find a hole(which is what youve been restricting to lessen the cold air flow.) try wadding up a ball of perma-gum, window sealer, some sorta plug forthe hole, its not nessecary for function of refrig, only to make the crispers colder, but usually too cold. blocking of fthe hole willl make the crispers only as cold as rest of refrig

The fridge gets very cold even when I turned down the temp to #1

You have air dampers in this fridge.
Adjust them to a warmer setting.
Look along the left wall down low beside the vegetable bins.
If this does not correct the problem you have electronic temp sensors that have gone bad.
A technician will be needed to determine that.
Keep your fingers crossed that the damper is too open.
Any adjustment will take 24 hours to be noticeable.

Vegetable and fruit crisper drawers freezing foods

You have a defective thermistor and damper control in the fresh food or a bad control board.
Check the thermistor first.
Also, adjust the return air damper at the bottom left side of the fresh food sction to warmer.
