Re: cd rw drive wont burn audio cds on inspiron 6400
GO TO THE system icon in the control panel hardware configuration? make sure that the cd drive has the proper "region" install selected or could simply be a dirty laser clean with alcohol and a qtip swab then try?

Have you tried replacing the CDrw drive? It sounds like the write mechanism in it is toast. You can find a replacement drive on ebay. Just put in your laptop's model and say something like "HP DV1000 cdrw drive". Or you can purchase an external drive that plugs into your usb ports on ebay or at www.tigerdirect.com
Not all Inspirons have CD burners (the 4 factory options were CD-ROM, CD-RW, DVD-ROM, and DVD/CD-RW. You can confirm that via Windows Start > Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager and double click on DVD/CD-ROM drives to see what model drive you have, then just Google it to see what it's capable of.
In case you have either a CD-RW type drive or a DVD/ CD-RW drive and it doesn't want to burn CD's , then it's a bad drive.
Sounds like the software your using to burn with isn't compatable with your burner. If your using a software and not windows.Get Ashampoo Burning Studio which is a free full version for 30 days.It supports most drives. Also try cleaning the eye with a cotton swab and a little alcohol, swirling the cotton swab around and around in both directions very lightly.Repeat at least twice and let dry.Put the cd in and try burning with it and the Ashampoo burning software. If the drive is not faulty it should burn without a problem. Also make sure you use cd-r or cd-rw discs and try it on a couple of new ones because sometimes the cds are bad even when they are new.
Try to use dvd cleaner disk to clean the lens, if it doesnot work, i think you have to replace your drive , this happens with Dell alot. but try to clean it, uninstall then install the driver back and check if its work.
Are you trying to burn a dvd? If so from the spec you gave in the problem description your drive will burn cds(CDRW) but will only play dvds(DVD). If it stated DVDRW then you would be able to burn DVDs as in the CDRW.
right click on "my computer"
Device Manager button
click the + or plus sign on CD/DVD/CDRW drive
right click on your cd drive
click the + sign on IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers
right click on each option
and uninstall all of them
*if you have not uninstalled everything, do not click on "YES" for restarting the pc. make sure you uninstall everything first then restart it.
*after the restart, just wait for all the devices to install by itself and wait for the message for another restart then restart the pc again.
after that, if the issue is still not resolved, the you need to find a firmware for the cd drive then if updating the firmware doesn't works, then I suggest to replace the optical drive or if the system still has warranty, call Dell Tech Support for replacement drive.
